thoughts on DIY invitations

Joe and I have been doing DIY invitations and it has pretty much consumed all my free weeknights for the past two weeks. We're *FINALLY* done and just need to go to the post office tomorrow to mail them.

I really like how our invitations came out, but jeez that was a lot of work. If I had to do it again I would shell out the money for someone else to do it for me. =)

Yeah, that was a lot of work, but I'm proud we did it and most of all, I'm happy they're done!

It was the most impressive craft project of my life, far outdistancing the clay snowman cat I made in 8th grade.

Margaret, I want to see them!

I am Semi DYIng my invites, I have them letterpressed, picking up Tomorrow, and I plan to wrap/package all the cards with handmade paper and tie with Mohair yarn, and seal with wax.

Seems like it will be an ambitious project =(...

We kept 4 invitations (1 of each kind) for ourselves and took pictures of them last night. I'm sure we'll post pics at some point, but some people who are receiving invitations visit this site so we don't want to show people just yet?

I'll let Margaret decide =)

Wow, that's heavy duty you guys. My head hurt from just assembling a simple, flat 3-piece card! Congrats on finishing, and I'm sure your guests will be blown away, and you'll look back and smile at your accomplishment!

Oh my, I think joe is exaggerating a bit. We made the same type of invitations, but with 4 different types of fabric because Joann's ran out of cloth. =) I'll post pics soon.

Oh sorry, yeah, it's more like 4 variations. Perhaps I should temper your expectations by showing you my last art project, Chester 2.0:

This is version 2.0, b/c surprisingly, I made a WORSE version of this cat the year before. More pics here.

Sorry for the delay =). Below are some pics (last names are whited out).

We got the paper pieces done at Mercurio Brothers, Vista Print, and Kinko's. We embroidered the fabric ourselves and put together the invitations ourselves over a couple weeks.

Wow, that's amazing! You guys embroidered the fabric yourself? I wouldn't even know how. Hey, I used to be able to see the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption from my apartment on Fillmore Street! That brings back a lot of memories (of living in the city) for me! =)

Yes, we embroidered the fabric ourselves. We didn't know how either at first, but we got the hang of it. It's not too bad once you know how to do it.

You give the embroidery machine's software an image that you want done and it figures out how to embroider it. Then you set the machine up, hit go, and it goes off and embroiders the design. It takes about 5 minutes per invite. Some designs are more suitable than others for embroidery. For example, cursive lettering didn't work too well for us at small fonts.

You bought an embroidery machine? How much did that cost?
