Reception after Eloping?

FI and I are really considering eloping. However, I would like to have a reception, or really just a big, informal party at a banquet hall, afterwards. We're in Florida and have family spread out in the northern states. Is it ok to elope and then send out annoucements and invites to the reception afterwards, giving a date approx 3-4 months down the road? Or is that too long after the elopement? We just want to give our families enough notice so they can save up some cash, get the time off, etc.

I think that's a great idea!!  I would have loved to do that but I had unfortunately promised MIL that we wouldn't get married without her (I was feeling guilty for moving from England to Canada with her only son and Grandbabies!! In hindsight I wish I'd kept my mouth shut! Lol)

Making announcements & invitations is a lovely way to let people celebrate with you. If you video the ceremony you could play it at the party!

Where are you thinking of getting married?

that is fine.  my parents got married in 1971 and eloped and had a reception in my moms home town like 4 months later.

I definitely want to get a videographer so it can be played at the party. I think my parents and FI's grandparents would love that.

We were going to do a cruise and get married at one of the ports but my mom kind of invited herself along and said she'd make it her vacation... but we don't want to take our 4 year old and 17 month old with us, obviously... We need them to stay home with my parents, so we nixed that idea. Found a cute bed and breakfast in the Smokey Mountains and will just make reservations in a few months, when I know my dad will be in town, and take off for a week, get married creekside with the mountains in the background. I'm in Florida, so I definitely want something different, and this is it! Turn it into our honeymoon, go horseback riding, things like that :)

Thanks ladies! You made me feel better about the decision. My FI had basically left the planning up to me and whatever I wanted but... I'm back in school full time, I work nights full time as an RN, and we've got the two little ones... The stress of planning a wedding on top of all of that was getting to me. Eloping it is! And good to know 4 months isn't too long after to have the party/reception :)
