timing of announcements

So, do announcements get sent out before the wedding, to people you're not inviting, or do they get sent out after the wedding? I feel like if announcements get sent before the wedding, some people may think that they're actually invited, or they may expect an invite to follow (my fiance thinks that you're supposed to send them before so they can send gifts if they want). Any ideas?

I've read that announcements are never ever supposed to go out before the wedding - because you're right, it could be confusing - and also, isn't it kind of tempting fate? We're planning to mail ours the day of the wedding, but it's acceptable to send them even longer after. And people can of course send gifts after you're married! In fact, even your guests have up to a year after the wedding to get you a gift.

In the old days, announcements would be mailed by the MOH or MOB on the day of the wedding.

We mailed ours about a week after we got home from our honeymoon...the ones that went locally also included invites to our At Home Reception whih was 6 weeks after our DW.

Announcement? Did I miss something? We didn't send anything out after the wedding apart from our Thank You cards...what are they for?

Well, in our case, we're having a really small wedding (30 guests), so we of course have many family members, friends, and co-workers who we couldn't invite. So voila - we're sending out about 75 announcements to let those people know that we're married and that we're thinking of them. That's all! It's definitely not a requisite, but we thought it was nice...
