To veil or not to veil

I really didn't like the idea of a veil at first... but since I'm getting married in a church is seems like I should.

How are you wearing your hair? Are you wearing a veil? What kind of veil?

I've been to plenty of church weddings where the bride didn't wear a veil. It's not a requirement.

i wasn't going to wear a veil and then my husband told me i needed one - it's what would make me a "bride". he was too cute that i decided i wanted one. i got a REALLY small one (it was actually a communion veil for a little girl) and i never put it over my face, i only had it pinned in the back. i took it off after the ceremony. but i was very happy to have it and i love the pictures of it!

gonzostar, that's so cute! I think a small veil is perfect for a beach wedding. I agree to keep it pinned back... we want to see the face of the happy bride. =)

I personally love the look of veils because it's so traditional.

I love veils too. I think that was the one thing that really made me feel like a bride on my wedding day. I had a fingertip length veil with a finished satin cord edge. I choose fingertip length because my cousin had a chapel length and we kept stepping on her veil all day long. At the end, it had a big tear in the tulle.

Another option is maybe you can just wear it for your ceremony and not for pictures or the reception?

I wasn't going to get one; all I wanted was my hair down and wavy with a big flower. My FI doesn't like the idea of a veil either...but my mom and grandma are ready to cry about it =o( so I don't know. She keeps telling me I'm just a girl in a white dress without a veil lol.

Then I thought ,maybe a small veil...but someone told me they whip around in your face if your getting married on the beach...because if the wind and that a really long veil is the way to go.

Now I kinda like the idea of a really long veil on the beach, I can imagine it flowing in the wind... I'm confused. Help would be appreciated ladies.

I wasn't going to do one at first...was just going to wear my hair up with flowers in it. I really didn't want to have anything over my face. But, like the pp, I like the look of a long and skinny veil blowing in the breeze. It makes for great pictures. So, I bought a very sheer chapel length veil that will go under my hair at my neck. I ordered it custom so it's not too poofy at the comb and with a pencil edge. I'm really happy with it and I think it's going to look great. After the ceremony and pictures are done, I'll just take it off for the reception.

Abattyref, thanks for the idea of having one custom made. I don't like poofy veils either. If I get one I want a really long chapel length, sheer non-poofy veil. If you don't mind me asking, was it expensive to have made?

i think for your wedding you should do whatever makes you happiest -- veil or no veil, covering your face or not. i think the "tradition" card gets played so much with everything wedding! i'm not even ever sure where all these traditions come from. 50 years ago (which isn't really that long, if you're speaking about tradition) women wore much different bridal attire. anyways... don't mean to be a downer. i am wearing a fingertip veil with a lace edge, but only because it's killer with my dress. ;)

You can get custom ones made to order here for not too much:
http://occanseydesigns.com/

You can also order it will less fullness at the top so that it isn't as poofy.

That said, I got mine on eBay for $20. Still waiting for it to arrive, so I will hold back my review until I have it in hand.

When I was first engaged, I was not planning a veil, but in recent weeks, I have changed my mind (on my dress too) and want to look more bridal-y...when else can you sport yards of billowy tulle, but on your wedding day?

These pics are kind of what I have in mind (sorry, too lazy to PIP):

No matter what, it's your day! Do it your way! White, ivory, pink, red or black...veil no veil...cake no cake...all that really makes a wedding is two people in love with each other, ready to commit for life and an officiant! BASTA!

A Veil.... That's a definite. I'm planning on wearing my hair up and my veil is an elbow length. Only planning on wearing the veil for the formal pictures and the ceremony.

You know, the more I think about it, I might just forgo the entire veil altogether. Is that weird? I have always loved messy up-dos; they are very me, and I was thinking about have one done with flowers pinned down on the bottom. Hmm, Who knows what will happen!

Ali:
you could do the messy up-do with flowers pinned on the bottom and stick in veil attached to a comb in as well. If I do a veil, it will be on a comb...like this

I have really long hair, almost to my waist. Im planning on wearing my hair down and curled with just a few pieces on the sides clipped up. I wonder...how do I secure a veil?

tahoegirl - where did you get your lace veil? I'm looking for an ivory lace-edged fingertip length. Thanks!

i got it at Belle Bridal in Redondo Beach, CA -- if you're in the area, they were really great to work with. Ask for Rosa.
