Too over the top?

I know this is a goofy question but Do any of you ladies feel like you went a little over the  top for one day?

Of course we all want to have the perfect wedding. But sometimes I wonder if I am thinking about the little things way too much.

I think sometimes when money is involved, we can feel this way about anything. Remember a wedding isn't about the small things, it's about you two.

I don't think so! But I do know what you mean about the little things! And that's true, that they really don't matter. But hey, we're all in love and in love with weddings and just want to have a magical day :) If it's all within reason, then why not! When else will you be able to do anything like it again?

Honestly, if you're doing more than going to the courthouse then yes, you're probably going over the top.  But it's not "just" one day, it's your special day in which you celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in your life.  This is a very good reason to go over the top.  Some just have more means to do it than others.  And it's up to you to draw the line where it stops.

Good point ladies!! My younger sister just got engaged and FI and I were talking to her about weddings and I was telling them to start saveing money now and FI just made the comment that they dont need to go to extremes like I am. Which I dont think I have been bad at all.

Nope. :) We did spend a LOT more than I ever dreamed we would (before I knew how much the wedding industry was marked up) but we don't regret a single thing we did for the wedding. It was PERFECT in every way. So no, I don't think we went over the top because it was exactly like we wanted.

Siouxzan response is right on point! And don't let your FI get to you with his response! I don't feel like I was overtop in anyway. I like what I like and I did everything to make our day, "Our Day". My DH said some things along the way, but it didn't deter me at all. Everyone including him are still raving about our wedding day!

Sometimes when I think about the little rituals that we do for a wedding, the things that everyone knows goes with a wedding - picking colors, BM dresses, flowers, the cake, decor, favors....etc. then yes, it seems a little silly. But I wouldn't want it any other way :)

I don't feel like I'm going over the top, I feel like I"m doing a good job of restraining myself; in the end we want the marriage :) And maybe I'll wear my wedding dress on weekends when I think no one is watching while I watch trash TV or dance around to music, but hey, thats just me getting a few more miles out of it lol

There are times I DO think that, but it's when I watch some of the weddings on tv. Yet I think it's such an important, once-in-a-lifetime event (we hope!), that the couple should do their best not to have any regrets. They should have the wedding elements they want within the budget they have to work with.

I've never been to a RL wedding that I thought was overdone. That's probably because the area I live in frowns on a lot of money being invested in any kind of a party, weddings included. My community seems to look at it as showing off. I'm not saying I agree, just that that's the prevelant attitude here. I'm planning a catered formal dinner party/vow renewal at a nice venue at a local hotel and I'm already getting some raised eyebrows!

One of my bridesmaids, who got married in February (me last November), said to me, "You should have the wedding that makes sense to you."  It's your relationship.  It's your life, and your money, and anyone who wants to make judgements for you being too over the top, well, they'll get over it.

We held back on some things, because it didn't make sense to go bonkers in those respects for us, and went all-in for some other things.

On another level, it was the first (and who knows, last?) time to unite ALL of our friends, bring our families together to celebrate, and also turned out to be the last time I saw my aunt, who passed away that spring.

So no.  It was exactly what we wanted and I don't regret a minute of it - the planning or the day itself.

To be honest, I did obsess over the little things more than necessary. However, that made it way more enjoyable for me!! And during the wedding it was so exciting to see every little detail fall into place. I don't think its too over the top if it is contributing to making a day feel as special as it can for you!

I don't think I went too over the top. Like a lot of girls mentioned above, I think it really is about having the wedding that best fits you. My budget may be small to some, large to others, but it made sense to us.
