ugh. cookie help

I found a new cookie recipe that I wanted to try that is heart shaped cookies with two layers-one layer is vanilla and the other chocolate.

I tried the cookies last night and they didn't turn out right at all. The recipe said to mix it all up, then put it in the fridge to chill for a while before rolling it out and cutting out the shapes. I thought it was not thick enough, but I had measured everything out perfectly so I thought-maybe it'll be better after it chills. But it was still too thin and runny to cut the shapes out = (

But I tried a little bit of the dough and it tasted great so I really want to find a way to make it work. I was thinking next time if I add a little bit extra flour it will make it thicker?

did you cut the butter (real butter not margarine) into the dough with a pastry cutter or did you melt it and pour it through?

My cookies never turn out right if the butter isn't the right consistancy.

princess-it said to use softened butter and just beat it together with the sugar. So I left the butter out for a few mins before I put it in

jess143-thanks I'll do that when I get home

hey jess-sorry I still haven't pm'd you that but I haven't forgotten about it. I've had a hectic week and haven't spent much time online after I got home. I don't recall it asking for milk though. I remember it asked for butter, sugar, flour, vanilla, an egg yolk, and cocoa.

But since you bring it up-is there a specific kind you are supposed to use when baking? We usually keep 1% in the house
