Update on my GD - I swear this is one big April Fools joke

I had my first appointment on Monday with the GD doctors and received a meter and diet suggestions.  The results of the 3 hour test were pretty ridiculous and my blood sugar was way over where it needed to be during each pull (except the fasting baseline read) so there is no doubt my body is having trouble processing insulin.  But as I check my blood sugar as directed, I'm finding I'm way under where I need to be.  DH even checked his and I'm on par with his normal blood sugar reads.  I don't get it!

Yes, I probably do have GD since I failed all tests miserably, but maybe the one size fits all drink is just too much for my body to handle regardless.  I have a hard time even coming close to the recommended carb limit per meal (unless I add in sugary drinks or load up on starches) and my daily intake is much less than average because it's always been.  Don't get me wrong, I'm eating twice as much as I was pre-pregnancy, but compared to what's "normal" I'm way under the mark.

So now I'm just frustrated.  I'm frustrated I have to do this monitoring because I'm a big baby and really suck at getting enough blood for testing.  I'm frustrated I got so worried and so upset when in reality, I think the original test is flawed.  And I'm frustrated because, dammit, all I want is cheesecake and water ice and those are all over the carb limits I'm allowed!  Wah.

There is a plus to all of this - there is a good chance it hasn't affected my baby at all.  Next Monday is the growth scan, and I just know she's going to be measuring small because I still am.  Maybe then I can get a little leniancy with this whole GD thing.

Rant/Vent over, thanks for reading!

Are you recording your results somewhere? I would take them to your next appointment and see what your doctor says

Yup, I have a log where I track my carbs and blood sugar an hour after every meal.  They say to be under 45 carbs for big meals and blood sugar below 140 an hour after eating - I'm at average around 99 each test.  I may just need to test some cheesecake to see what happens...muahaha.

Yeah, something doesn't seem right. Can you get retested? As horrible as it is at least you might be able to get some guilt free cheesecake sessions!

You might be how I was, though my sugars were barely failing.

I never monitored my sugar daily, like I said I just was monitored twice at my dr and it was below were it needed to be. He even said I could have the occasional sweet. Hopefully your dr will agree they you won't need to be monitored every day.

Oh and I saw eat some cheesecake! Just a tiny piece should be ok :-)

Jen, I really hope after seeing my results my doctors take me off the testing!  it's 4 times a day and I have to log EVERYTHING I eat.  And I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as a tiny piece of cheesecakes with me ;)

Haleigh - Your situation sounds like a nightmare to me too, since the numbers, literally dont add up... Do yourself a favor - have the cheesecake. Or at least reward  yourself a nice big-ole slice after your growth scan.

Of course I had to go and read articles on the controversy of these tests and I read that they're basically 76% accurate in that 76% of women diagnose actually have it, while 24% don't!  What the heck!  I'm totally eating peanut M&Ms as a test today.

I found out about my GD right at the start of the holiday season and it was soooo hard not toward sweets! My friend at work watched me like a hawk! She'd yell at me if I even thought about going in the kitchen.
So I waited until my dr appt where they checked my sugars and since I was good I ate sweets! Ok I did take it easy on them and would just have 1 to 2 cookies and not 5 :-)
4x times a day!!! Ew! That sucks!

I found out right after DH bought me huge amounts of chocolate for V-Day, and now it's coming up on Easter and my basket better not be full of the rabbit's food!  LOL!  I tested after I ate peanut m&ms and that was ok...bring on my cheesecake!

That is crazy, Haleigh!! I can only imagine the frustration.

Count me in the "indulge in cheesecake right after the next scan" group!!

Wow I'd be super confused as well! Hopefully they can give you some insight about the results you're getting. I'd die if I couldn't have my desserts! haha

Honestly, deep breath.  GD isnt the end of the world, and all this torture your going through now you wont even remember once you have your baby.  I was there last pregnancy... and im waiting for the results for this pregnancy... I could be there again.

Have you changed your diet since monday? bc my blood sugars were all fantastic once I was watching my carbs. which is something to be happy about because you wouldnt want to have to take insulin on top of all this.

Also, Up your water intake- you'll bleed a LOT more!

Good Luck!

Well I successfully made it through all of my appointments and while my blood sugar results are all great, they're not going to retract the diagnosis.  I really wasn't expecting it to be since it can get harder to manage the further along I go.  I'm just glad to hear that everything is OK.  All appointments went well - Evie is measuring 34 weeks while I'm 32 weeks along and is on track to deliver at about 8.5 lbs.  That's bigger than I expected, but it is a side effect of GD after all.  As long as I manage my blood sugar, her weight gain should even out!  The doctor was happy with her growth and the fluid measurements, so I have no more GD appointments and will only need to fax my weekly logs to them for monitoring.
