Uplighting

Hello Brides!!

So, now that I have started planning the wedding I am OBSESSED with uplighting! I've looked into it and of course it can be expensive. Ugh. So, I've seen a lot of brides finding lights and actually buying them for their big days. I was wondering if there were any other Bay Area brides that have done this, and were looking for someone to share with to split the costs with them. Or are there any brides interested in going in on something like this ourselves?

Let me know! Always up for something creative and of course ALWAYS looking to save a few $$$$$~!

hey... i was just going to post the same thing.  i think i am interested in sharing some DIY uplighting. My wedding is in April 2010 in LA, but since i live in the bay area, I think it will be easier to share with a bay area bride. Let me get some info. How many lights do you think you'll need? did you book your venue yet?

I shared my uplights with a fellow PW-er.  It was a great way to spice up the decor affordably.  We bought our stuff at progearwarehouse.com.

i love uplighting as well.  i'm not sure how much uplights are but i my light specialist's prices are pretty reasonable.  he's going to provide ambient lighting, pinspot lighting, and a few washes for under $2k.  still a little pricey, but definitely the cheapest prices i've found (others quoted me about $3k)....good luck ladies and if you need any contacts, just holler !

I'm planning on doing my own uplights... I was doing some calculations and I'm figuring it would cost be well under $500 (not including shipping which I would imagine would be around 30 bucks?).

http://www.stagelightingusa.com/index.php

It's about 14.50 or so for each par 38 can, 90 watt light bulbs are about 5-6 bucks (depending on the brand), and gels are about 1.25 each so even if you buy 20 spotlights (which is a lot) you will still be well under $500.

14.50 x 20 = 290

6.00 x 20 = 120

1.25 x 20 = 25

TOTAL = 435.00

@ Phannie - hi!  (not stalking you, btw hahaha) -- I'd love to share uplights as well; my wedding reception is at Sheraton Palo Alto on July 10.

Ok, so far Marimar and Piggly are interested in sharing uplight costs if we end up doing this. (I'm just waiting to hear on a quote from a lighting vendor before I really throw down and do this.)

Piggly: how many u looking for? I'm looking to have 8 or so of these lights and Marimar needs 10-12.

FYI: Mari's wedding is March 20, mine's April 10, and Piggly's on July 10 - time frame works so far! :)

Phannie: I'll have to talk to our hotel event manager to see how many we can use.  Probably just 8.

This is the first time I've even considered any special lighting so I need to figure out how to arrange them around the ballroom and search for ideas.  Are you/we planning to get these kind of uplights http://www.stagelightingusa.com/Par-64-Cans-18-cat.htm (basically have them on the floor and have it cast the light up onto the wall, similar to this look:  http://weddings.theknot.com/Real-Weddings/48421/detailview.aspx?id=48421&type=3&specific+detail=lighting

I'm waiting to hear back from our venue, Sheraton Palo Alto to see if I can even do DIY uplights.  I had to check with them first to make sure that the room can support a photobooth & the AC/electrical power requirements.  I'm sure it'll be ok but I'll get back to you girls about it!

I'm also planning to go there next week to check out the space.  We were only there once during our initial search for a reception venue (over 3 months ago!) and we looked at 3 hotels that day so there's starting to run together in my head and I didn't take pictures.

Thanks!

Jaryce>> our dates are March 20, April 10, July 10. Do you already have uplights?

Piggly>> sounds good. We'll probably finalize whether we can or can't next week then. I should be hearing back from the vendor soon. and Yes, those were the types of uplights we were looking into. I've been reading that the Par 38 and 56 are pretty good, and less expensive. If you're getting 8 of them, I don't think you need Par 64 all the way around.

Marimar>> yes please look into them if you get a chance! Jeaninemae (on the 1st page) did a lil calculatin from the place she was looking into

Hey girls,

Could I get in on this too?  :) My wedding is on June 12.  I'm having someone do the lighting at my reception venue but I was thinking of doing DIY for the church.  I'm not exactly sure how many I need, maybe around 20?

Do we know about how much it would come out to be for each of us?  It seems that if we shared costs between everyone, it would be very very affordable.

Jaryce>> are you planning to rent them out? If so, how much? And did you think the Par 38s were enough to light the area? Most of us only need about 10. Do you have pictures of the room with the lights you used? thanks!

jjpeng>> Sure! We haven't figured out the logistics yet. We are still trying to confirm how many ppl would be sharing the cost. If you're interested, I'll add you into our PMs when we start dealing with the logistics :)

This is so so great! The more the merrier!

Please let me know as soon as you girls know exactly how many you need and if your location allows them.

As the colors that come with the par lights are limited to those colors, I think we are safer getting our own gel sets.

As soon as we know whats going on. I will buy them!

I am so excited!

I'm meeting with our hotel's event manager this Friday.  She said that I can have DIY uplights at the ballroom; the space will accomodate it.  This'll also give me a chance to figure out how many I should use.  If memory serves me right, there's gold doors on either end of the room which I think will look great with uplighting.

I went to the Modern Luxury Bridal show at the Ritz-Carleton yesterday and got some good ideas about uplighting.  One area had uplights that changed color!!  They also hid the uplights with white 3-fold opaque screens probably around 5" taller than the uplight which I thought was a brilliant idea.  I'll upload a photo of it once I get it off my camera.
