Vent about work >.<

Sonas some of you know I left the corporate world to become a nanny. I've been doing that for about 6 months now an everything was goin fine until the father (who rarely speaks to me) told the mother to "lessen the spending habits"

So now all of a sudden the father doesn't want to pay me for holidays or for sick days (when THEIR kid gets me sick)

This was ALL discussed 6 months ago- I get paid for things they get paid for. So if it's a a holiday that they get the day off and it's paid- I get paid too. People get pai for sick days, it's usually 5 a year maybe more depending on your company.... Yea no they haven't paid me for the last sick day.

One of ther kids gave me a stomach virus which lead me to stay in the hospital for 10 hours. The bill was 5K ( I only had to pay 400 through insurance) but that's 400 bucks that I wouldn't have ever spent since I wouldn't have gone to the hospital!

Also the father leaves his dirty food plates around the house on days he knows I'm coming. He knows I'll have to pick up after him. He basically treats me like I'm just "the help" and not apart of the family like the mother originally stated.

The other thing is, he doesn't let me use their wifi....so if I have to look up an activity for the kids or search for something work related I have to use my phone data. I can't even log into their computer because they set it up for guest only and I don't know the password to get in! And they won't tell me!

I have also spent so much money on gas.... Driving the kids everywhere! I have also spent my own money on the kids buying them toys and treats and have never aske for a cent! But thu can't pay me for 1 sick day?

The kids are suppose to eat 2 fruits a day- if that doesnt happen i get a "talking" to.

Well on friday the boy has ONE slice of an apple left and the mother says "eat that or you wont get ice cream" and then I repeat that. The boy says "I'm not eating it and ill still get ice cream" so what did the mother do? Gave him ice cream and he never ate his fruit!

I get shit if he misses a fruit but she can break her own rules!? Come on!

I have decided to break the news to her tonight when she gets home that I will stay through the summer, but when school starts I'm gone.

***breathe**** vent over!

Bless you, that's a horrible situation to be in. Did you sign a contract when you took the job that stated you would get paid sick days?

It's a good idea to get out, it doesn't sound like they'll change even if you do try to discuss it with them.

There are lots of 'normal' families out there that I'm sure would love to have you with them if you decide to continue working as a Nanny. Good luck xx

Thanks. And nope, didn't sign a contract... I wrote one up but they kept postponing to sign it. It just got pushed aside and at the time I thought "these are really nice people they won't screw me over"

Believe I or not I have worked many jobs and nobody has ever screwed me over until now... I have learned that you really do have to take care of yourself first, and I have to do what's best for me which is get out of child care completely.

I'm glad you made the decision to get out.  I was waiting for it and hoping you would say that you are leaving.

One thing that really bothers me is people being taken advantage of and being treated poorly.  It seems to me that is exactly what is happening to you.

Good luck finding another job path for your own happiness.  I remember when you took this position how much you thought about it and to see that you're going through this now, is just sad.

Wow - they should definitely reimburse you for that 400 or at least be willing to make some concessions because of that event ... you have a right to vent

I too remember when you took this job and how excited you were for the opportunity. It's sad they are treating you horribly but I'm glad you're sticking up for yourself and getting outta there. Good luck!

Honey, I was a nanny all the way through school and NEVER was I ever treated this way. Give them notice and say bye-bye. There are plenty of other nice families.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear you are having such a terrible experience. I have some experience as a nanny and regular babysitter and was treated so terribly :( It's good that you are leaving. Do you know what you are going to do next? Just follow your heart because if you love what you do it won't feel like work.

That’s a terrible situation. I’m sure you can get a job with another family that treats you with respect (and not as a maid). Your pay is your pay and what you are entitled to. You should also NOT be using your own gas (or it should be paid for) and you should have access to the internet if doing things for the kids.

I saw the contact thing...the next job MAKE sure you have one signed. its unfortuantle that it comes down to stuff like that but its so important to protect yourself.

It’s so hard when its things like this. You end up loving the kids but hating the parents. My friend has a daycare and she says its awful. The kids are all fantastic but the parents are a constant headache.

Good luck sweetie, Let us know how the talk goes…..

That is just horrible!  I was getting angry reading each scenario and they just seemed to get worse the more you wrote! They knew they were not going to live up to the terms of the contract which is why they put off signing one. So happy you are leaving! Good riddens to wretched people!

Thanks all who have posted and to those who remember my excitment and now agree with me that it is just a sad situation...

I have spoken to the mother and she says she feels horrible- she said she had NO idea the pay rate she was giving me along with the hours I was working- I don't know if that's ture- I'd like to think so but you never know with people.

I have decided to go back to corporate and so that is what I am doing as of right now. I fixed up my resume and I am now searching for something full time, with benefits and someplace where I will be working NORMAL hours.

It's very important for me to be home at a certain time so i can spend time with the fur baby!!!!

Thanks all who have photo 3390816-1

Furbaby has gotten SO big!

Um...no? If you guys discussed that when you started, that's the way it is! They can't just change things up on you because they feel like it. Granted, you should have a signed contract and if you don't then they can get away with it. The other stuff sounds like a terrible living situation, I would definitely tell them that things need to change or you are gone.

And if it's that bad, can you find another job for now? I know it might suck, but what about some sort of retail or office job just to get by until you find a new nanny position? If they are that unreasonable, then it's not unreasonable for you to just get so fed up that you quit right away. Maybe with you gone they will realize how nice it was having your help!
