Vent: Wells Fargo! UGH!

So last week we did all the reservations for our honeymoon, flights and hotels and all.  We put some stuff on my credit card and some on my FI's.  I figured all is good, we got everything booked and then this weekend we went out to eat and the restaurant denies his card so of course he calls customer service .... hmmm account has been frozen for possible fraud....turns out Wells Fargo just denied the charges for our honeymoon plans because they thought they could have been fraudulent!  What!  No phone call from customer service nothing.  It took FI at least 20 minutes on the phone to get them to tell him what happened and now we have to book those things over again.   Luckily the flights are still the same price and all, I haven't heard back from the hotel yet.   But what if the airline fares had gone up?   Warning if you bank with them and you know you will be putting some large charges on your credit/debit card call ahead and tell them so this doesn't happen to you.   We are going to make sure to call them everytime he pays for something for the wedding or honeymoon now and to let them know we will be traveling when we leave on our honeymoon.

Oh, I cannot stand Wells Fargo either.  I left them two years ago, for dumb things like that.  I hear your anger.

Wells Fargo did that for your benefit to try to protect you from fraud! If it really WAS fraudulent, you'd be rejoicing. lol It's no big deal, yeah they should have called you, but it's tough to stay mad at fraud protection.

This happened to us with Chase's credit card too.

They were denying everything, and i do mean every single transaction we used because they feared it was a fraud.

It was getting so annoying we were thinking of cancelling it because it was pretty much worthless.

this happened when i went abroad and was using my atm card like crazy. wells fargo froze it and i was stranded without money until i figured out what happened by calling them. at least they allowed me to call them collect from abroad (gotta love them for that). i understood their intentions so i got over it but it was a PIA.

You are right princess it is nice to have the protection if you need it, but my bank would have called me.  I have had them and Barclay call when we were in Las Vegas and I went on a bit of a shopping spree but they didn't just deny everything they left me a message on my cell phone telling me to call customer service.    I just kept thinking, what if we were like WMforever stuck somewhere and can't access any of your own money?

I would have flipped out on the poor lil customer service girl!!!

I had C/S call me after I got back from a cruise once (visa), to make sure I had authorized the charges. Thank god! If they haden't let the charges go thru I would have been screwed!!!!!

Is it possible that Wells Fargo had an outdated phone number or had it incorrectly?
Usually they call and if they can't get a hold of you, they put a hold on the card anyway and hope that YOU call them so they can find out if it was fraudulent charges or not.

ditto mel - and i think they do this when they see stuff outside of your "normal" spending patterns

be happy it really wasnt fraud tho ;-)

and i do this too - when i'm shopping ALOT (regardless of dollar amount spent) i use the debit function so i use my pin number versus using the credit network AND i call if my purchase is over $1K just to let them know...

I agree with PB- be grateful :)  I know it's frustrating, but it's better than them not doing anything with real fraudulant charges...

That SAME thing happened to my MOH this weekend, in Palm Springs for the Bachelorette Party... she put Friday nights dinner on her card for everyone (over $500) and they froze her card.. she goes to use it on Saturday and that's when she found out.  no phone call, no nothing.. all she got was a HUGE hassle trying to get ahold of them on Saturday to clear it up, while we're trying to relax at the pool..

RIDICULOUS if you ask me.  I have WaMu/Chase and we have fraud protection, but they ALWAYS call us first, instead of the other way around.

...and coming from someone who had 2 months worth of salary stolen from fraudulent use of my debit card number - be thankful they froze it ;-)

They definitely should have called you.  How did you get it resolved?  I would call and speak to a supervisor to make sure that doesn't happen with your account again, if possible.
