Wedding on a holiday weekend

I am planning a May 2009 wedding and the venue I love only has availability on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.   I see pros and cons to this and am leaning towards booking the date, but I want to make sure I am not making a major mistake. Any thoughts for those who have held their wedding on a holiday weekend or attended a wedding on a holiday weekend would be awesome..thanks!!

Our wedding is over Labor Day weekend, so we had many contemplations as well.

Memorial Day is a huge travel weekend.  Although the people that want to be at the wedding will be there.  Think about that, who's going, as well as how many people you are planning to invite...?  This will help make the decision...

We only have 100 of our closest friends and family- so no one minded.  We have a handful that do the 'typical' party at the lake, so its just one year they wont go- o' well.  I didn't want a few people making me feel obligated to change my date, those who want to be there will....

If thats the date YOU want- then go for it.  I only discussed it with my closest family and a few friends, once I realized they didn't care and were super supportive- we went for it!!!

Good luck!

I had two cousins (different sides of the family) who BOTH got married a few years ago over 4th of July weekend (I think the 4th was on a Monday).  One got married on Saturday and one on Sunday.  I went to both weddings and they both had really good turnout.  I agree with HMM, your friends and family will want to support you.  The only suggestion I have is to mail out STDs early -- so people can get plane tickets and hotels before things get booked up for the holiday weekend!

Good luck with everything!

I was in one last Memorial weekend.  As long as you tell people early, most will be there.  In fact that is often a weekend where people want to make a trip so it gives them one to be on.  I would plan more events than just your wedding though so people can make a trip out of it.  I also would make sure that you are okay if specific people are not able to be there.  It will happen and you have to be willing to accept that.  You will probably have turnout, but if there are specific people you want, check with them

Thank you for all of the great insight on having my wedding during Memorial weekend! I feel much better about it and am going to check with my family and close friends.  My fiance and I want a small wedding (party of 80 people), so hopefully most of them will be able to make it.  Great tip about sending the STDs as soon as possible, so that guests can make their travel plans in sufficient time.  Thanks a bunch!!

Our wedding is Labor Day weekend, which happened since that was the first time the place was available, BUT it turned out to be a good thing, since my Fiance's family is all traveling from out of town so it gives them more time to enjoy the weekend without a quick flyin and fly out. Also our vendors are not charging anymore for the holiday weekend, but that is something you may want to check out!

Believe it or not, everyone is flying in and we are doing well as far as invites go, probably 175 -200 people.

We're also doing it on Labor Day weekend.  We have quite a few guests that will be traveling to attend our wedding.  With that in mind, we decided on the holiday weekend for traveling...its nice to have 3 days to travel rather than 2.  We sent our save-the-dates about 8 months ahead.  Most people don't seem to mind the holiday weekend wedding.

From another stand point, my birthday is the end of May and typically falls on or near Memorial weekend.  Its always been nice to have the extended weekend to take a quick b-day getaway or simply relax.  We also considered this for our anniversary ;)  Booking travel for holdiay weekends can be a little more and book quickly, but its nice to have the 3-days!

I just went to a Fourth of July weekend wedding and it was awesome.  It was 12 hours away from just about all of the guests, so it enabled us to all go without taking too many vacation days from work.  It was a great time and I really appreciated the extra travel day.

We have some 'labor day triplets' on here!  YAY!

I think with 80 people you should be fine, it actually sounds very intimate, so you know the people that are there want to be and wouldn't mind at all!
