Welcome "Home"

So, you've got, or are in the process of buying, your first home together.

What project are you most excited to start?  Aside from unpacking, of course.  ;)

Tell us all about it!

We are still in the process of looking right now.... its super hard to find that perfect house :) We would love to buy an older craftsman style home, but we are finding that most of them in our price range and way to small or else have some weird newer additions that add in space but don't match the original character of the house :(

How did everyone search for their first home? we have a real estate agent and I look on craigslist all of the time.... but other than that we really have no idea how to look.

We're in the process of closing right now.  We've been looking since March!

Kristinkay, we also went with a realtor and the best advice she had for us was to make a list of what we "had" to have and what we would "love" to have.  From that list we then made decisons like, ok the kitchen needs tile, which we can eventually do on our own as opposed to wanting a three car gargage right away which is harder to add on later.  The list helped a LOT!  We were able to walk into houses and if it didn't have the three top things we had to have, we walked back out!  :)

It's really frustrating, but we finally found the house we love.

Also, keep in mind school districts and taxes!  Huge deal breaker in our case.

We closed on our first home in May, so just a few weeks before our wedding. You can imagine how busy we were! The closing process took longer than we thought, but we are so happy to have our first home.

KK-we did a lot of looking on realtor.com We found that it was very easy to find ones we liked on there and then our realtor would set up a time to go see it. At first she was sending us all these pictures of homes and they just weren't our style. So we foudn it much easier to look at pics online ourselves

I second realtor.com.  It's amazing and up-to-date.  Also check your realtors site.  www.trulia.com is a great one as well.  (We found it not always up-to-date) but it has nice features.

Here is our house. We just moved in last October. Finding the right house took a LOT of looking online. The MLS was great! We actually only looked at 10 houses in person, but we knew exactly what we wanted because we had done so much research. It has been really exciting owning our own place. We have painted about 75% of the inside and have done a few other upgrades. Had to fix a bathroom leak (which was due to poor caulking) but otherwise, it's great!

Here is our house photo 813028-1

Good luck to all of you with the house hunt. It is so worth it once you are in a place of your own! :)

Supersara:   I LOVE your house.  It is beautiful!  We will start looking this fall, but prices are still up in the northeast..... hard to find good buys.  Hopefully, with time, we will find a house.

Good luck everyone with your new homes!!!

We are renting our very first home together! I am excited! Its so cute! We are responsible for it like its our own-due to the owners are on the other sided of the country and are military as well. So we are treating it like its our own! I will be very excited to decorate- it will be a slow process. Also- we kinda have to decorate in a fashion that can be moved and look good in any house-due to lots of military moving!

We just started looking and found the perfect home, it just happens to be the very first one we looked at (ahh).  We have done some intense internet research and one requirement is to have a pool which really limits our choices.

So we put an offer in on the very first house we looked at! Its a short sale, which we know can be painful (we are living in a condo now that was a short sale my parents bought and took 4 months to close), but most places in our area are either short sale or foreclosure.

We have been countering back and forth and then they wanted our final and best offer and once we submitted it, our rea got an email back saying our negotiator went out of town til the 19th and its killing me!!

I know with short sales, the wait is usually super long to hear back from the bank, but we have been so lucky, so far.  Here is the house :)

FI and I bought our first house at the end of May.  It was exciting, terrifying, stressful, and fun and we love living here every minute!! We finally had a housewarming party this weekend. We have a huge deck with a great backyard, so that's where we've spend most of our summer!!

Good luck to all those looking or still in the process....it's tough but sooo worth it in the end!

Thanks Mrs. KC, the negotiator was supposed to be back today, but our rea has been calling and emailing and no answer...  Its an investment company and not a big bank so she has no other number to talk to anyone else.  The wait is killing me!  All I can do is think about how I want to decorate, even though we have no clue if we even have a shot at it!

omg I feel like you and I are in the same frame of mind in the stupid waiting game!

We close on the 28th, and seriously...this week is taking FOREVER!  I too want to start decorating!  I'm trying so hard not to buy things for the house, but I caved and bought a dining room table on craigslist... it was a steal! lol (I justify everything when shopping)

...keep us posted on how things go honey1234!

I hate waiting!!  We were supposed to hear from the bank yesterday, but our negotiator called in sick :(   So maybe well hear something today? We haven't agreed on a price yet, so DH would kill me if I bought anything since we still have many many hoops jump through before we know anything for sure.  I thought the wedding was stressful, but it was nothing compared to this haha.

8 more days and you close, that's awesome :)

What's the update honey????

DH and I just bought a trailer (UGH!) off his dad.  Not my ideal situation, but it fits our 5 year plan, we were renting a small duplex, and the trailer payment and lot rent is less than what the duplex was, so we're saving for a sizable downpayment on a house.

BUT!  I get to decorate!  YAY!  In our area, landlords are pretty strict and you can't paint, hang pictures, etc, so I'm happy to be able to do something with my house.  AND we get to practice doing some reno, since we plan on selling the trailer when we are done, we want to update some things.

Jessey - I'm so jealous! That house looks AMAZING. I will never get anything close to that in Northern California as long as DH wants to stay in the Bay Area. We'll probably buy a hut.

Our situation -- we're starting to look at houses online, decide which areas we want to live in, revamp our budgets, and continue to save. Our credit needs a little massage before we can be approved for a loan, we'll probably go through the VA or FHA programs. I'm hoping to start the process as early as February or no later than June/July of 2010.

Wish us luck!

OMG...Can't believe PW has a "home" group!  How fabulous!  Although I really do not need anything more to distract me from work!

Anyhow, this is my first home.  FI's second.  Our closing is scheduled for 2/5.  This was a short sale, but luckily it was already pre-approved (someone else had bid and backed out after the offer was approved).  I am really excited and scared too.  I can't wait to start painting!

By the way, that is not my dog or our cars!  LOL

Don't have a picture of the exterior of the house yet, but I will post it as soon as we close!!
