research different areas of a wedding and find out which aspect you want to splurge on the most and go from there. there are nice articles on the site. Here is where you can find an article right for you:

You should first figure out how much you have to spend, what you can reasonably afford. Find out right now who is paying for it, are your parents or anyone else helping out? Don't count on money you aren't sure of only to be short later.

Then start pricing your area - what is average for a venue rental, DJ, flowers, cake, photographer ect. And yes, definitely decide on what you can't live without (and this may change a few times but make sure you don't change your mind too last minute!) so you can put a little more money toward that and splurge in other areas.

For example, I REALLY wanted a great photographer for as long as I needed her, so we made that our big-ticket item to save for and cut corners by doing a ton of DIY and even little stuff like black chairs instead of white.

Once you start looking at local vendors and their prices (I suggest a spreadsheet) you'll very quickly get an idea of what you are working with. HTH!

I agree with the other ladies. You need to figure out ig anyone is helping pay for the wedding. Wbat type of wedding you want will also help with a budget. If you can do anything yourself that can save alot of mony too. As you look around get opinions and know what you want your budget will be a reflection of this. We too decided our photographer was going to be our splurge. Our budget is $15-20K including rings and honeymoon.
