What to do in Monterey

We already have a place to stay, but dont really know what to do or see beyond the Aquarium. We are not super active sporty kinda people. Maybe historical, arty stuff, food, shopping, what else is cool? Also any cool day trips in surrounding areas worth doing? Thanks!

Cannery Row is fun if you are in the touristy frame of mind. If you walk or drive just short distance south (just a few blocks), there is park called Lover's Point (or something similar) which is fairly nice.

In the surrounding areas, you can check out the Missions which have low cost tours.

In town itself, you can do a walking self-tour of various historical landmarks, including Hemingway's residence.

You can find some ideas here:

Bubba Gump's is cool if you like seafood but there are other yummy seafood places around as well.

Here's another site with ideas and lists of shops and restaurants:

I'm glad you posted this. We were thinking about going there for our honeymoon.

I've always wanted to eat at Bubba Gump's because Forrest Gump is my favorite movie!

I've been to their gift shop in SF, but we (my dad, brother, and me) already had dinner that night so we didn't get to eat there.

That's true Dirty. But I don't eat seafood at all. FI loves it so we need places with seafood for him. As long as they have a steak or hamburger on the menu Im good.

I was there 2 months ago. Had a blast. Cannery Row was awesome. We ate at Bubba Gumps..Not a fan. The best clam chowder is at Old Fisherman's Grotto on Fisherman's Wharf. Yum, Yum.

I lived there for a summer while I interned at CSU Monterey Bay.  I spent a lot of time hiking in Point Lobos (it is just south of Carmel).  Pebble Beach is beautiful to drive and golf if you want to spend a a lot on a round of golf.  It is supposed to be on the best places to dive although the water is cold.  There are several places on canary row that rent sea kayaks.  My favorite restaurant was Fishwife- really good and very reasonably priced.

Good tips - I'm compiling a list. Anything not in the wharf area, or even a little further afield? We aren't 100% sure of lodgins so if anyone knows great places to stay please pass those on too.

What about Mission San Juan Bautista - is it worth the 45 minute drive to get there?

i vote for not really having a plan - or just compiling a list and just "winging it" once you guys arrive??

i hate vacations where there is something to do or planned every day - and since monterey isnt that far from the bay - you can always go back, no?

it'd be different if you guys were going to argentina and had to pack all the sights in - but monterey isnt that far ;-) so if you miss anything - you can always go back and rediscover and "re-celebrate" your mini-moon???

Oh we aren't going to have a plan for everyday. I am just compiling a list of possibles. But no, we can't go back easily. We don't have a car, and my dad is renting this one for us. So we can, just not easily. We don't want every day jam packed, but I haven't been since I was a child, and HI never has and really wants to go.

There's always the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I believe it's one of the larger aquariums in California.

Walking distance is First Awakenings, a yum breakfast spot and fairly popular. You have to wait to get seated.

And of course, Cannery Row. Old Fisherman's Grotto has fabulous clam chowder!

The Aquarium is awesome. Just be aware it will be crowded on the weekends. Plan on spending sometime there. Lots to see. Lots of great places to eat.
