When did you...

Open gifts and/or leave for the honeymoon?

Okay, so FI and I are ready to book our honeymoon! :) But I have a delima. Our wedding is July 7th, 2012 and we are taking a cruise! We can either go July 9th-13th or 16th-20th. I honestly want to go right after the wedding (July 9th-13th), but we live in Iowa which means we have to fly. The closest airport is Omaha which is 3 1/2 hours and you have to be there 2+ hours early. If we booked July 9th-13th we'd have to fly out on the 8th down to Florida. The latest flight leaves @ 5, which means to make that we'd have to leave home by 10/11. This won't give us any time to open gifts on Sunday as usual when family will be around. We could open gifts when we get back, but idk I'd rather do them the day after the wedding...

Ugghhh I'm so bad at making decisions! Lol, have any of you wonderful ladies run into this problem or something similar? What did you do? What are you opinions? TIA!

We were in an almost identical situation. Our wedding was July 8, and it ended around midnight. We stayed at a hotel, and by the time we got home, it was noon on the 9th, and we still had to do laundry, pack, and leave our house at 3am to catch our 6am flight on the 10th.

I figured having those few hours in between would still allow us to open gifts, but emergency situations arose (family was hospitalized), and we had no time for that. I was bummed at first, but it ended up giving us something else to look forward to after everything else was over. The fun of being on a HM immediately after your wedding trumps gift opening, IMO. And we had a blast gift-opening upon our return.

We opened our gifts the day after and then flew out later that evening. We packed for our HM the week before so we could add any last minute things we needed and then just took them over to my parents house. They day we opened gifts we met at my moms house at 11 and left her house at 3. I was surprised that I wasn't exhausted from the day before but I think I was still running on the excitement of it all but I was up at 6 the next day (our wedding ended at 12.)

I say if you want to open gifts the day after you will be a little crunched but okay. I also think like FCTF said it would be a blast to open them when you get back from your honeymoon.

Well...DH's parents took the gifts home with them and demanded that we open them the afternoon after the wedding (despite running around town like crazy people running errands and dropping stuff off)......that I didn't like..I felt so rushed!

We left for our mini-moon 1 day after our wedding. I'd do that again..only this time I'd insist on NOT opening the presents infront of them. My MIL was more interested in what everyone gave and being judgemental about their gifts :S

We had such few guests and most just gave us envelopes so DH and I opened them the morning after in our hotel room.

We are getting married 11.19 (in dallas), and sunday 11.20, we will have to head back home to Houston. FI's parents will probably take all the gifts to their house after the wedding since it is closest to the venue, and Sunday morning we will load them into out car, and head home. Just so we don't lose anything, and I am able to write down who gave what, we will wait to open them once we get to our home. :)

If I was in your situation..I would wait to opend them when you get back from your HM. it will give you something to look forward to, and you won't have to feel rushed about getting everything open. If you want, maybe open all the cards before the HM (ake sure to write who got you cash for thank you's) this way you ahve it for the HM? but I would save the actual wrapped presents for when we got back ! :)

HTH!

We will have guests from out of state and country and our priority is to hang out with them and visit before we jet off to our HM so we will prob open gifts before our HM or when we return depending on what's going on.

FCTF I love what you said about having that excitement of opening gifts to look forward to...extending some of the wedding excitement ;)

I think we will leave the day after and then open gifts the following weekend...the people we are closest to (parents/siblings) will be there then, just none of the wedding party, which will be fine

Thanks ladies!

Our wedding was Nov 5th, and we left for our mini-moon the next morning and got back on Tuesday. MIL brought the gifts homefrom the wedding and we all went over there on Wednesday with my family and opened everything up.

Our wedding was September 10, and we left for our honeymoon at 5am on the 11th.

All of our physical gifts were taken to our house by our family members, and we opened those when we got back from the HM. We opened all checks/cash/cards, and deposited all that money before we went to the airport.

We were being spontaneous and got married on our one year anniversary. So we just got married in the morning at a park with immediate family. Since there was no reception we flew to Vegas an hour after we said I do. Now that I think about it we really didn't get gifts. Things like frames and a toasting and server set. When we renew our vows I don't know how it will work out since we will be registering.

We were married on August 20 (Friday) and left for our HM on Augusst 22 (Sunday).  It was nice to have that day in between, but we honestly didn't need it--we were so excited when we got home that we opened our gifts that night and ate some cake.  :)

I say go for the earlier HM date.  If it turns out that you don't get to open your gifts before you leave, at least you'll have something to look forward to!
