Where to purchase Cheongsam or Qipao?

Does anyone recommend an online store where I can buy a traditional cheongsam or qipao?

I do not want those mass-produced ones that are sold online.

For instance, "Qipao by Jane" http://www.qipaobyjane.com/  has gorgeous qipaos but they are ultra-expensive!

I got mine from www.eaststore.com. I don't know if they're "mass-produced" or not depending on what your definition would be, ;-) But mine was custom made mixing elements from two different dresses and then made to fit my tall-white-girl measurements. I dealt with them through email and had no problems. The finished product was about $200 with free shipping (it came from Shanghai). While it wasn't the highest quality silk I've ever seen before, it was beautifully made and fit me perfectly.

I just checked out Qipao by Jane's site and I love the interface she has on custom creating your own dress... but holy crap is she expensive!!! I wonder why too... some of the brocaded silks she has you can get a local fabric stores. Crazy

Good luck!

STBCruz - lol.. yeah, the site was running slow and i was like what the f???   So i just kept pressing submit over and over and over..

JD - I know, tell me about it!   When I saw the site and the sexy dresses, I was so happy and then I saw the price.. ugh.

Abattyref - Um.. when I first read "eaststore," I shuddered but decided to give it a shot anyways... and i gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised!   I haven't found the perfect one but there are definitely some pretty ones.. and they're very affordable!

Here are some that I liked.  Black (possibly bad luck), gold, and purple are not the traditional colors so I'm wary about ordering those.   I'd have to dbl check with my family.  I like the sytle of the red one the least....  i'm way too picky.

Ooooh, my FMIL actually got one made in Canada for me since there are a lot of mainlanders who move there.  FI's aunt's dad is actually a dressmaker so he's making it for me.  I'm actually going to take a look at it tonight. :)

Chloey, the purple one is GORGEOUS.  I love the dragon embroidery on it, but I agree that the red one is much more traditional.

Yeah, I was worried at first too, but I was pleasantly surprised with the end result.

I was able to get my dress in burgundy instead of the bright red, I tend to look washed out in that bright color.

I agree with prismis, the red is beautiful and traditional, but I'm wowed by the purple one. I'm pretty sure family will say the black one is bad luck, but perhaps purple could be a compromise. ;-)

Good luck!

Thanks for your help, everybody!

J8 - Wow, you are sooo lucky!  I did some googling for chinatown places and they're pretty reasonable...  I see a range from $200 - $500 for custom made.   However, after seeing the eaststore dresses, I just might buy online and alter it at a local seamstress.

Prismis - you and J are so lucky..   Yes, the purple one is gorgeous although I'd prefer a deep, rich red...  When I looked at it again on the site, the price tag is close to $700!!!  so i'm def scratching that one off the list.

Abattyref - Same.. I would prefer a deep, rich, blood red...  But yes, black and white are bad luck.   I'm just gonna stick with red.  Thanks again for the link!

Pink - lol..  you can always buy it and wear it on a romantic date/anniversary!

$700?!?!  That's almost as much as a wedding dress...

I just saw the one that FMIL brought me from Canada last night and it's beautiful!  If you have the resources or any family in Toronto, you should try to find one there.  Or if you can find the name of a shop, you could call.  It's only $100 for very good quality work!
