Which came first, the date or the venue?

We have begun looking at venues and we don't have a specific date in mind but would like Fall 2014. A venue I really liked was all booked and the earliest we could have it would be January 2015.

So my question is, which came first for you? For those of you that had a specific date you wanted to get married, I am assuming you had to be a little more flexible with the type of venue you wanted?

For those of you with a flexible date, did you look for the perfect venue and then book the date based on what they had available?

I am having such a hard time taking the plunge and committing to a venue because I am worried about booking and then later finding something better or more affordable!

Help!

Taking the leap and confirming a booking is scary isn't it? Once you have made the decision though I'm sure you'll feel much more relaxed about the whole thing.

For DH and I we chose a date and booked around that, but we had a very small wedding so it wasn't difficult for us. My brother & SIL chose a venue and then a date because they needed somewhere that would accommodate the number of guests that they wanted.

we chose a date and then looked for a venue. Most venues wil ask your date- usually the 1st question...so have that in mind or some flexible dates.

Most places we went to didn't wow us, so it was a long road. and the ones that did, it was outside of the budget.

The venue we have now i really like and it'll be slightly outside the budget if all guest accept, but we were frustrated after looking for a while and we are fine with it being a little over.

We compromised too b/c we wanted to have overnight accommodations on site to avoid limos etc, but hey the hotel is 20m...and probably gonna have my dad take me to the venue to finish getting ready.

We had our date picked first, being that we wanted to get married on our 5th year date-iversary. So we went with a Bed and Breakfast Venue. We had the ceremony and reception there. DH and I got to stay the night with our wedding party that night.

We had our date picked out first. When booking a venue, they will ask what is the date of your event so they are able to check availability. Alot of time, if they are  booked, they will ask if there is another date you would like. I was very strict with ours and would not budge. But if I were you I would pick the date(s) you want and start contacting venues that you are interested in that way you can narrow them down that way.

I knew I wanted to get married in April so thats how we started. I still have not booked a venue. I am looking at one next week and then I am making a decision and putting down a deposit.

We figured out how long it would take us to save $ and went from there. We did not have a specific date -when we found the venue we wanted the date we picked was booked so we changed the date since it wasn't too important to us -we wanted that venue. It's a tough call! Good luck!

We picked our date first before we started looking at venues...I always wanted to get married in a mansion (if I was to get proposed too) so my husband was fine with that.  We served the whole day at the mansion because at our venue two weddings can go on in the same day, one earlier one later.

If you aren't picky about the date and your set on that venue, then 2015 is a go. If you haven't already, make sure you know everything about your #1 choice.  Sometimes venues only seat a certain number of guests or they don't let outside caterers come in, no sparklers, etc. so consider your potential estimation of guest lists.  This can also be a reason that you may or may not go with your #1 choice.

You ladies are so sweet and helpful! This was really giving me anxiety! We have decided to go with the venue that will have us married January 2015. We still need to discuss details, set a date and give the deposit but it just has the most bang for our buck! Feels good to have that mostly taken care of!

We narrowed our date to two weekends that would work for us and then looked for a venue. It made us mildly flexible.

Isn't is a great feeling getting things checked right off that list?!

We started with a date in mind, but everyone told us it was a bad idea but I wanted to keep the month and ended up with the only available Saturday of that month so we lucked out. I would have done a Friday or a Sunday but there was no price break so I wanted what was easiest for my guests and whatever have me a longer weekend since I'm not going on a honeymoon right away.

We had a date in mind, we wanted Labor Day weekend because so much of our family would be traveling a good distance and we thought that would be helpful for them...but nearly everything was booked over a year out for that! However, the venue we really wanted had the following weekend open, so we ended up on 9-10-11 by accident which was cute!

I would definitely pick a few different dates that you could work with, that way if you really  find a venue you love you will have more chances to get it!
