which to purchase next?

I'm just a casual shooter, at home, additional photos at friend's wedding, of the baby, etc, and I'm just starting to feel comfortable with my Canon (just upgraded from the 450D Xsi to the t3i)

I love doing macro photography, so I've been thinking about a good macro lens, but at the same time, I've also been thinking about a speedlite flash (probably the 430 since the 580 looks way too complicated for me). Some indoor/wedding pictures have horrible red eye, and its got such a slow recycle time, I've missed a lot of opportunities.

If you were still learning, and could only purchase one, which one would you get and why?

Thanks for the input!

i think as a casual shooter, you'll get more use out of the flash....

Yay you got the T3i!  How do you like it so far?

I think you and I are in the same boat, being a casual shooter and with a baby.  I would personally get the flash first.  It's very handy for taking photos indoor and at night.  The ability to diffuse and swivel the flash will open up another world of capturable moments for you.

Macro lens is fun, but I think a flash is a must!  You might be able to get a used macro lens for a good price. As a matter of fact, DH and I were just talking about getting a new macro lens.  If that happens, I can sell you mine, which was rarely used.

I did get the t3... I was looking between the 1 and 2, and due to the reviews and the better low light performance, I decided on the 2... went to the store and the price difference between the 2 and 3 was only $49... how could I not get the 3!

The LCD screen on the 3 is AMAZING, sometimes the color on the little 3 inch screen looks better than the image on my computer. The tech said one major difference between the 2 and 3 is the lcd screen can come out and swivel which could be handy for the video or when shooting crouched down at an angle. Haven't used it yet, and honestly, we have an hd camcorder, not too sure how often, if at all, I'll use the hd recording feature, but so far so good!
