White or ivory dress -- does it matter?

So, I'm about to order my dress and have no idea what I should do about the color. I've tried on the ivory in the store and love it. To be honest, I'm a little afraid of the full-on white. But the FI is very traditional and doesn't understand why I would even think of an ivory dress. The only downfall I could think of would be looking off white next to the linens. Otherwise I doubt people would even notice. What to do, what to do...

Does it really matter?

I don't really think it matters. My finance (yes - that's what I call him) is very traditional but he did tell me that this is my dress and I should buy whatever I feel most comfy in. The only thing he restricted me on was the amount I was allowed to spend.

Also - in pictures ivory looks white...

I agree with CIN that in pictures they look pretty much the same, but I think, in person, stark white can look a little cheaper. It also can be unflattering to your teeth. This is just based on my experience in bridal shops. I'm amazed that your fiance cares - mine wouldn't have the first clue what the difference was! Bottom line, get the dress you want - you're the bride!

Hmmm... Are you absolutely sure your fiancee knows what you mean by ivory? Unless it's a very yellowy ivory, then I think they look very similar in photos (and even in person to a guy.) ;) I chose ivory because it just looked more complimentary to my skin tone (i have yellow undertones). Some people look fantastic in a white-white though. I laugh to think though... if you asked my DH what color my dress was (and it's only been about a month since the wedding) ...i can picture him giving something of a blank look. Hehe. :)

Get the ivory...you FI will NEVER know! FWIW, my dress was ivory and FI wore a white linen suit...we looked fine next to each other...and each color complimented our individual coloring beautifully!

I agree with PP. Get the Ivory. You don't want to be kicking yourself afterwards because you don't like the white. By the way, what do you mean when you say that your FI is traditional. Because to me it means that a White dress is for a pure/virgin bride and he doesn't want to give a false impression with the ivory.

As others said, I don't think your FI will see the difference. They all look white in person. I had a silk white dress and it looked white...a friend of mine had an ivory dress and it looked white...especially to a guy. :-)

I agree with all the other ladies here...go with which ever you want...cause when i was trying on dresses...I was shocked that the one I picked was ivory, and not white...so I ended up going with Ivory. I mean if 4 fashion conscious women cant really tell..then no one else will.

Mary -- by traditional, I guess part of that means the symbol of purity. The gown didn't seem too non-white, but I looked around the store and maybe saw one white white.

This dress shopping is a lot more difficult than I thought. But thanks to your help, I think I'll go with the ivory.

Personally I like ivory better; it's a bit softer on the eyes. Besides when you break down tradition, in the beginning most girls didn't wear white to there weddings at all. It wasn't practical because it got dirty and they couldn't afford a lot of clothing. Most girls only had 1 dress and it was more likely then not they would wear it again. In fact a lot of girls got black,so they could wear it to a funeral (there was a lot of death in that time, meds weren't the best). I believe it was Princess Elizabeth (though I could be getting her confused with another Princess =oP) that started the "getting married in white trend" and even then "white" wasn't pure white, they hadn't developed the chemicals needed to blench fabrics to pure white in those times. So you see ivory and antique white are really the true tradition.

It was Queen Victoria (when she married Prince Albert) who is credited with starting the whole white dress thing. Previously, brides wore their best clothes or the most expensive new clothes they could afford, but not necessarily in white. Anyway, Moemarsita, your guy is going to be blown away no matter what - just pick what you want!

Thanks for the correction =o) wasn't sure about that part. Anyway, yes, just wear what you like. You said you liked the ivory, so go with it. The difference is so slight, your FI wont even notice.

Trust me, when you FI see's you walking down the aisle, he won't be focused on the color of your dress, just on his beautiful bride. :0)

If you like ivroy best, then go for it. :0)

Get the ivory! I want an off-white color as well, either ivory or something with a hint of champagne or pink. I tried on this Jenny Lee dress a couple of months ago and totally fell in love with it. It looked off-white but had the slightest hint of pink in it that only showed under light - I wish I had a good photo of it but the photos on her website are in black and white :(
