Why the long engagement?

Don't you hate when friends and family ask that?

We decided 2011 b/c it would give us more time to plan with all the stress and chaos. All we need some time to save some $$ to help pay for this party... lol

Why did you decided in 2011?

I am currently in nursing school and it is the most logical idea to simply wait until I graduate.  No sense in trying to plan a wedding while I'm trying to get through school.  Also, we want to save money so that when we are married we can get our own house or apartment and not have to have roommates.  But, as odd as it is, we've already been engaged for a year and a half and we have two years left to go!!!

Because we both got kids and bills, bills, bills!!!!  We don't want to go into a marriage with debt just because we wanted a nice wedding.  So we are saving, saving, and then more saving.  Plus, we been living in sin for the past 2 years already, what's another 2?  This is just us throwing the party and actually sealing it with a kiss, we're not in a rush for anything.

Because we have other family members that are getting married in 2010(they got engaged after us) so we got the shaft and have to wait.  We also  live 1500 miles away from our families so they will have to come down here.

Oops already kind said this on another board but....

short form:  Important family members will be out of the country in 2010. Money, easier to save over 22 months than one year.  FI is going back to university for an engineering degree and we want to get his first year finished before the wedding. No one wants us to rush, they want us to take our time and it will give our folks more time to save to help out.

#! MONEY!! is the biggest obstacle to overcome for us. Stretching it to 2011 will give us time to save and pay off some bills as we go. We are paying for the wedding ourselves. Some members of the family have offered to pay for some things but the bulk of the expense will be ours. Other smaller factors that weighed in the decision: 1) We wanted a spring wedding close to our anniversary and next year March was way too close for us, so we decided on our 5th year anniversary in 2011. 2) I have braces on! no way I'm getting married with them, yea they're clear but I CAN SEE THEM...lol. 3) He's been away for over a year and a half for work and just returned home. We want to give ourselves some time to reconnect again :0). There's no big rush! We want the wedding to be the best day that we are able to make it.

I have a 2nd job so all I do is keep stacking my chips from that gig and put it into a savings account.  That's our wedding fund!

We have also whittled down our cell phone minutes and cable to save more of those cash cookies for our wedding.  But hey, every little cent counts...

Technically we are not engaged yet because I would prefer a shorter engagement, but we, or shall I say, I, am in the pre-planning stages! It's so fun and exciting to think and plan what I want to do for our big day! My sister jokes with me all the time that there will be nothing left to do once I am really engage; ring and all!

I'm also in nursing school (just started) and FI is going to college as well.  Thus, 2011 will be a great year for us to finish school and allows us to save money.  Hopefully by then we will also be able to get our own place and enjoy our first year of marriage on our own in our own home (:

Family and friends are urging us to speed things up, but we'll see.  My main concern is my MOH may not be able to be in the wedding if we wait until 2011 (she's going to medical school).

Long distance. Me Texas, him Florida.  I graduate in May 2011 from dental school and he will finish residency in June 2011. Just makes sense to wait.

It's so hard to wait to plan everything! I'm so eager to get things rolling.  I'm trying to squeeze in seeing wedding sites when he is here because he doesn't get a lot of vacation time. I want to have a place booked in next spring. So that's been fun! And also a little worrying because now I need to figure out how to fit everything we need with our budget.

I'm so glad this forum is here. I don't feel so alone now with having a long engagement, hehe

We're hitting the slots at the Hard Rock Casino every friday to make money...J/K! We both are trying to put aside at least $600 together for a period of about a year and a half. That should cover most of everything and we're also paying for things as we go.

We are desperately not trying to exceed our 15,000 budget wedding and honeymoon included! So planning and getting prices now is so key into knowing how much money we have to save for the next year.

The venue for example required that we pay a 20% down payment of the total and 90 days from that we'll pay 30% and the remaining 50% is due five days before the wedding. Along with the savings, we hope to put majority if not all of our tax returns into that same pot of money.

We both freelance on our spare time to mae extra money. We don't spend unless its absolutely necessary. Our families will pick up some smaller stuff like flowers and cake. Since I am a graphic designer, I'm designing/making my stds, invitations, programs, thank you cards and anything else that's paper related. Michaels coupons are saving me right now! :0)

Its going to be tight for a while, but I think we can do it and still have the wedding of our dreams. Its great that we have this time to stretch things out and plan accordingly.

Well about the same as others above...bills bills bills. I have bought a house, then he went back to school and will be done Dec 2011. I also have been sick with acute pancreatic so that has been a problem. Did I mention that I am also in school for a certification and was downsized Aug 2008, but hired back 45 days later. He has been downsized twice in 3 yrs. So we have been engaged for going on a year. We are trying to do this all ourselves and we have big families.

We wanted to enjoy this part of our lives and not have be so stressful with planning. I also didn't want to rush planning.. We are still in the period when nothing is finalized so I can still change my mind (which I have), which I'm glad I gave time for.

I don't hate when people ask, but its the tone people ask in. Some people say it in a way that make you seem insane. Or that you can't get your FI settled..Or you aren't ready to commit...things like that.
