word to the wise....marrying in Mexico

so our friends just got married in Mexico, and surprise...it's not legally recognized in the United States...soooo....they are going to the courthouse on Monday to get "remarried."  now, I don't know all the deets, but i do know that they paid extra money ($1000) in Mexico and were told that everything was legal in the States....just a warning to all the PW brides....each case is diff though, their friends got married in Mexico, but got their marriage license in TX, and their officiant (groom's dad) is legally an officiant in TX, so apparently that one is legit....just be knowledgeable ladies! :)

Wow that stinks if they had to pay extra for that. We are doing a marriage contract so we wont have that problem. But I know someone getting married there in October, I will let her know.

Yea, I found that out when I was considering getting married in Mexico...also there's a bunch of legalities that you need to have done prior to getting married (IE required to stay in the country for at least 2 business days, blood tests, visitor's visa that you need to get when you arrive from your embassy as well as a letter stating your marital status from the embassy)..it got too complicated =P  But it sucks for you friends tho...

Yeah it sucks and it's expensive!  Our venue quoted us $500 for all the prep stuff, but we didn't think it worth it.  We're getting married at the courthouse before we leave for our DW.  The ceremony in PV will only be a spiritual one.  :)

i think alot of peeps get married here first with JOP or w/e then trollip to mexico to do the more "emotional and spiritual" one...

didnt JG do that before she left for singapore and manila??

isnt that crazy... My sister had a trip out to Reno to get married and when she went to DMV to change her last name they did not allow her becuase it seems that she got ripped off and the limo ride to city for the marriage license somehow never went through.. So be carefull to all.... Mexico, Reno, Vegas,, PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

yep...i asked her in advance if they were going to do that, and she was "assured" by her contact in Mexico that it was all legal....they are fighting with them now to get a refund on the extra that they paid....and going to the JOP on Monday....she said they're not doing any sort of ceremony, just signing papers...the judge even told them that it is NEVER legal (at least not in TX) and she doesn't understand why couples keep doing that...

i think it's sort of the best of both worlds to do what nidia and JG did/are doing

go to the JOP for "legalities" then fly off to the "real" ceremony

Yeah, it is very expensive and has many requirement, that's why we did it in the states "legally" and had a symbolic ceremony in Mexico. Easier and less expensive that way

right!!  and that's what you have to do if you get married on a cruise ship too i think....

side bar:  if this was going to happen to ANY couple i know, it would be these two....it's always frickin' Laurel and Hardy with them (and if you don't know who they are, you're definitely a youngster!)
