Diastasis Recti

Anyone "have" this issue?  I found a website online on how to check if you have it, you lay on the floor with you knees bent and place 2 fingers on your belly button then lift your head but keep your shoulders on the floor and feel the space between the two muscles.  If you can fit 2 or more fingers in that space you have it and if you can't then your ok.  I don't think I can get 2 full fingers in there but my question is, if you have it they say avoid crunches but if you don't have it and use the exercises they recommend for it, does it do harm?

It does. I had a horrible case of this, straight after my boys were born the midwife checked me and could fit her hand flat between my muscles, it was like they had slipped around to my sides - urgh, just thinking about it makes me want to puke!

Anyway, I had to have 18 months of physio and can still fit 2 fingers. I was told that crunches will strengthen the muscles but because they aren't together like pre-pregnancy there is a risk that it will actually make your belly stick out more. If you are concerned I would go and see your doctor to get confirmation either way so you can either get exercises from a physiotherapist or you can do a regular workout plan.
