Glucose test at 10 weeks- so sad

I received a message from my OB last friday asking me to make an appointment for a glucose test.  I googled it and learned that its normally test at 24 weeks.  I'm only 10 weeks.  I suspect its because both my parents have diabetes.  I don't have diabetes but am on the upper end of a healthy weight for my height (130lbs at 5'1).  Has anyone had gestational diabetes?  Is there anything I can do to pass the test?  Do I have to give up fruit and rice?

I just had mine done and the nurse told me that they really do it as a precaution. She also told me that it is better not to eat anything at all the day of the test (gives you a better chance to pass it). This way the test will be most accurate. I must warn you though, that stuff they make you drink is DISGUSTING. The first few sips are ok, but after that.... Eww I almost puked for the first time during my pregnancy. Good luck and hope you pass it with flying colors!!

I had GD - it was a mild case, I just barely failed.  I was lucky I didn't have to test everyday and I still ate sweets (I didn't limit myself which probably was a good thing!)

It really has nothing to do with weight or weight gain - basically when you are pregnant your body can't handle breaking down the sugar.  It probably is because your parents have diabetes they are testing you know.

You have to fast before hand, as far as diet there really is no way to pass by cutting out foods and chances are they will make you take the test again at around 24 to 30 weeks so if you didn't have it the first time there is still a chance you will have it the second time.

As ar as rice and fruit - I still ate fruit and rice is a carb which actually helps your GD.  The diet I followed was a protein / carb in the morning (I would eat an english muffin with egg and a slice of cheese) and then for lunch you can have fruit / dairy.  But that also depends on how the foods you eat effect your sugar.  There were some girls that their sugar would jump when they ate fruit.

The drink is not that bad - gross but it's ok - get the orange if you can, I had fruit punch the first time and it was gross!  It's super sweet - like unfrozen freezer pops.

Good luck and hugs!

Thanks ladies! I feel a little better about it now. I thought I was at risk of getting full blown diabetes during pregnancy. Now I have to reschedule my next visit bc it's set up for 2:30 pm. I definitely want to do it in the morning if I have to fast.

Hi ladies,

I'm not currently preggo - hopefully soon again- but was from the original PW baby group-

please don't try to "pass" your diabetes screening. It isn't something you want to fake- it is best to get the most honest result based on what your diet has been so that you know what your body is doing and how it is reacting to pregnancy.

There are a lot of serious complications that can arise, and you don't want to fake out a result to go on with undetected gestational diabetes for the rest of your pregnancy.

I had it, I had the shots, it's not that bad- you just have to be on board. It's about your baby's safety :)  I was equally as bummed when I found out I had it, but it didn't change the rest of my pregnancy, other than changing a few things in my diet when you recognize what your body will tolerate or not.

Happy 9 months to all!
