How strict are you with your diet?

Thanks to a good friend of mine, I became slightly paranoid about my diet.  I know the major ones to avoid like raw food, deli meats, soft cheeses, alcohol and caffeine.  But just the other day, I ate a poppy seed bagel and she told me not to eat poppy seeds.  I googled it and found out it was completely fine.  And now I want to eat crabs since I'm here in Baltimore fore work. I googled it once more and some reputable websites say its ok in moderation.  So during dinner, I had a salad topped with crab meat and was once again scolded.  I understand her concern but is she overreacting or am I being careless?

Oh gosh...I wish I could help with this one but I'm wondering the same...even though I'm not pregnant yet :S.

Actually, I guess the best advice would be to ask your doc. But some people get really "funny" when it about pregnancy (even if it's not theirs!) and overract. I don't think you're careless at all and I don't think we should stop enjoying our life while pregnant!

A friend of mine was soooooooo strict with food and alcohol during her first pregnancy that even though she had an easy one, she didn't like her experience at all and wasn't sure if she wanted another baby just because she didn't want to have to live the 9 months of privation again. Finally, she got pregnant of her second one and didn't exactly followed the book, which means she enjoyed a couple of things she shouldn't have (but only in small amounts). Her baby girl is just perfect and she's now considering having a third one :).

My doctor provided a list of things that I should stay away from all together, but also those things that I should have in moderation.  While I am a very picky eater regardless, I just stay away from the foods I should not have and if I can have it in moderation, I do! I love Pepsi and unfortunatley can not drink it as much as I used to. I have one if we go out to dinner or if I am having a ruff day as my gift to me.

I just had this coversation with my husband yesterday as he feels I am the only person who sticks with the "rules of pregnancy." We were discussing deli meats. Anywho I just let him know I would rather be safe than sorry.

My first two weeks of knowing about my pregnancy I tried my hardest to eat a pretty balanced diet. Onces MS hit that went out the window. Right now I'm lucky if I can get a one full meal down. I try to be reasonable about what I eat, but DH even started telling me if it sounds good and I can eat it then I should since I'm not eating anything else. I'm really, really hoping this passes soon...

My doctor also gave me a list of what to avoid. Other than that, I'm not going to stress myself out with everyone else's opinions.  @Milkgal- I feel for you on MS. :/ I lost almost 10lbs from week 6-8.5 because I couldn't eat anything due to extreme nausea- it was awful- but soon after that I started feeling better. (Not sure how far along you are?) Hope you feel better soon, too!

I haven’t met with my doctor yet, I’m only 5 weeks.  But I’ve been reading up online on what is safe and not safe to eat.  And based on that, I still ate my crabcake but limited myself to just one.  I ahven’t experienced M/S yet though, hope it’s mild.

I haven't seen my doctor yet this time around but I know the majority of things you shouldnt have like all the caffeine, tuna, deli meats (and of course I just bought a new container of roast beef and it's all I want) and all that.  If they say you can have it in moderation I saw eat it.  Like a lot of the girls have mentioned if you have m/s you're lucky if you can eat anything.  Last time I had m/s and all I could stomach was ginger ale and crackers, balanced not really but it was better than nothing.

I think everything is okay in moderation. Woman have been having babies for 10000000s of years and ate whatever.

Also, woman TODAY all over the world, eat differently than us and eat things "American" woman have been told not to touch.

I say moderation and be smart.

YoungBride - I was the same way!  I thought the whole lunch meat thing was silly.
