Maternity clothes questions

When did you started buying/wearing maternity clothes? I am at a point right now, that I am getting really uncomfortable with my normal clothes (mostly just my work attire). You can say that I am having a bad day... I changed 4 times before settling on the outfit I am wearing :( Its mainly my pants that are the problem - They don't button & the belly band can only do so much. I am just a hair over 12 weeks.

Also sizing - how the heck do you know what size to get to accomodate your growing body? I understand the belly gets bigger, but does everything else triple in size also (booty, legs, hips) to where I would need to go up a size or 2?

I think I ended up officially in maternity wear by like 16 weeks simply because I was getting tired of dealing with the belly band.

As far as pants and stuff go, I tried on everything I bought but it's hard because you arent sure where you will be growing at.  I'm all belly, nothing else on me got any bigger so I just needed to make sure that the pants had the stretchy top and could expand pretty big.  I think most of the sizing charts I've seen have you guestimate based on your pre-pregnancy size.

The only maternity clothes I bought were 2 prs of jeans...one from Old Navy and one from Gap...and not until probably 20 weeks or so...I was lucky...plus we don't have a dress code at my work...you can wear literally whatever you want...all summer I wore colored "khaki" shorts and cute tops and maxi-dresses...and only needed the jeans when it got colder...if you order from Gap they have free returns in maternity stuff...so I ordered 2 sizes and sent back the bigger one...and yes, I wore my same pre-pregnancy size...I only gained 19 lbs total thou, and all belly...nothing else got bigger...and lost it all by 3 weeks pp...but I also had a 9lb baby!

I think I've been wearing mostly maternity clothes since around 16 weeks as well. Regular jeans were so uncomfortable for me even at the beginning from the bloating and then later getting a belly, so maternity jeans are definitely nice to have! I got a really comfy pair from Old Navy and they're my favorite. I have some maternity tshirts and blouses that I'm basically wearing to save my normal clothes from stretching out. I'm wearing my pre-pregnancy size right now but I'm not sure how much bigger I'll get so I bought things in both smalls and mediums so I can grow into them, which seems to be working out just fine for me. Everyone is different so you may be all belly or you may gain in other places too so you never know! I was always so intent on not having to wear maternity clothes but I didn't realize how important they really are, especially pants, and soooo much more comfortable! HTH :)

i used the belly band with my normal pants up to 18 weeks and then i just couldn't stand it anymore.  i haven't had any weight gain anywhere but my belly, but that varies from woman to woman.  i bought some maternity pants a size bigger to accomodate and i kick myself every day because i don't fill them out appropriately!  i went to H&M for pants and bought some in my current size and some a size up - they have good sales and it's do-able without dropping a fortune!

I'm currently almost 14 weeks, and I can only fit in 1 pair of my "heavy Kristin" jeans. So, I look kinda redic only wearing 1 pair of pants to work. I'm very lucky as well b/c my work doesn't have a dress code, so I CAN'T WAIT until summer is here, and I can wear dresses, and shorts!

Until then, I plan on purchasing 2 pairs of maternity jeans. I went and tried on the ones that they had at Macy's, Motherhood store, and Gap, and they don't fit me right. So, I'm giving in and ordering a pair of Sevens for ManKind jeans, and Citizens. Nordstrom sells them online, so I'm just going with trial and error to see what fits! : )

Like you, around 12 weeks I started getting frustrated with my pre-preg pants + a hair band! By about 16 weeks, like the others said, I was in maternity pants or a size bigger than pre-preg (ex: a size M insread of a S in leggings). I kind of wish I had done it sooner for the sake of comfort. I think I wanted to stretch my non-maternity wardrobe and $$ as long as possible, but now at 21 weeks I absolutely love everything stretchy. Lol!

I have found that sizing charts and reviews on websites have been helpful for me. For regular pants, my normal pre-preg size in a maternity style usually fits best. For skinny pants, esp at Old Navy, I will go up a size. Tops and dresses have been true to my pre-preg size. Overall, this has been my experience at most places: Old Navy, Gap, MM, Target and Asos.

I think I say this every day now, but I cannot WAIT for the weather to get warmer so that I can wear loose, light weight clothes. Even though I still need them for the cooler temps, I hate to buy any jeans or pants right now, knowing I will not want to wear them in a month or so :-(

Officially purchased maternity clothes week 18 and boy was I happy! The hair band clip wasn't comfy anymore plus my fly was always open. Awkward! I purchased maternity leggings which I am in love with and a few shirts.
Murph I totally agree, pregnancy is uncomfortable enough, the last thing I need to worry about are my clothes. Maternity pants are a God-send for me. I'm always super bloated so my pants stretch with me. There are nights I wish I could sleep in them lol.

Well personally for me, it's not so much "disdain" for maternity clothes, but we do not plan on having more kids and I would rather spend money on clothes that I will wear beyond those 9 months! :)

I hear you, Jackie! It is so hard to spend money on these clothes that can only be worn for a few months. Unfortunately, I have somehow developed a maternity clothes shopping addiction and can't stop. What is wrong with me?! :-)

@Murph: It does make me kind of sad when I see/hear pregnant women talk down on maternity clothes. I hate to think it could be even partly about body image. For me, the delay was almost entirely about being cheap! Lol! I got some maternity clothes as a gift when I was in my first trimester and I couldn't wait to wear them!!

On the weekends I live in my lulu yoga pants, maxi dresses and cotton skirts, so I am a-okay UNTIL Monday morning :( My work attire is strictly professional, so I will have to purchase "maternity work clothes". I wish I could just live in maxi dresses at work too... I am so jealous of you girls that don't have a dress code! Fancy work pants blow!

I am okay buying maternity clothes! I think they are cute (ASOS especially!), I am just hoping they are cute ON ME.

I think this weekend I will take the plunge in purchasing some simple black maternity pants (H&M down the street, woop woop!) that I can wear at work & weekends. I am in fear of buying all these cute maternity clothes now when I am just a fresh bump, to have to squeeze into them or buy bigger sizes in just 3 months.

This pregnancy I was in yoga pants really early because my horrible morning sickness made anything pressing on my stomach completely unbearable. I don't think I really needed maternity clothes or pants until 20ish weeks but I tend to carry my pregnancies pretty well and not show a ton. I hate most maternity clothes because I think the far majority of them are just really ugly (I actually cried the first time I went into a motherhood maternity store because I hated everything but needed to buy work clothes) so I tend to just buy basics and use what I have - so tanks and skirts and jeans and then I wear my pre pregnancy cardigans and sweaters and larger shirts. Also just a word of caution: I have heard pregnant women buy things with the intention of using it as a nursing top as well- except I promise you will hate it. Anything I wore a ton while I was pregnant went straight into storage because it just made me feel pregnant again.... Like it didn't look like I was pregnant but I felt like it did since I had worn it so much prior. And also don't bet on wearing the stuff again... I bought some really nice stuff when I was pregnant before that I haven't worn once since I was due in October before and march this time... And living in a new climate. Ugh.

i also get away with wearing shirts a size bigger than my usual, like plain t-s and tanks under cardigans.  cardigans are a business professional lady's best friend!  and then you can wear them after baby as well!

I borrowed clothes!  The one good thing about being pregnant later than your friends is that your friends desperately want to give away stuff to you, ha!  I have so many maternity clothes, some I wear and some I need to pass on.

I did buy one pair of GAP jeans, one pair of GAP work trousers and about $100 worth of clothes from Old Navy around the holidays when they had a great deal going on.  Got mostly dresses, because I do have to wear business casual attire at work and had to attend a few parties and functions during the holidays.  At 34 weeks, I mostly wear dresses and love it!  So comfy and with a cardigan, I do get the pleasant attention of being preggers :)  So in total I probably put in a little over $200 on maternity clothes.  I may or may not even wear them again but not a big deal to me.  I am happy to pay it forward to my friends who are, or hopefully, will be expecting.

The one thing I am trying to avoid is nursing clothes. Maybe aside from supportive nursing bras, which I will buy after LO gets here, I just don’t see the point of some nursing tops.  The “discreet cuts” of some of them just look awkward or impractical.  Seems like a scoop necks or button downs would be a better option.  IDK, what do the BTDT moms think?

Around 12 weeks for me too, the pants started to annoy me and the belly band was annoying b/c of having to adjust it all the time all day!

As far as sizing goes - pre pregnancy size is your guide but it really helps to try things on. I ended up buying tops a size larger than pre pregnancy size to accomodate a belly later on vs the bump I have now.

With the first LO I was wearing my regular pants with belly bands for a pretty long time and then bought a few clothes and got some from a friend and my sister. I had to buy some pants, tops for work too. I love my maternity clothes, I think they are pretty and feminine. Now with the 2nd I popped earlier and I can hardly wear my regular pants anymore. I'm 16 weeks.

I started needing maternity pants around 12 weeks. I purchased pants to fit my body at the time and figured if everything else increased I'd purchase another pair. I only ended up purchasing 3 pairs of jeans, 2 shirts and 2 dresses (1 for a school presentation and 1 shower dress). Most of my shirts just stretched to cover the growing belly.

Ok, my belly got bigger since last week and I definitely will need to go and buy some pants for work. The pants I bought for my first pregnancy are still too big though and also they are summer pants. So, ok, let's go shopping! :-)

I have purchased zero maternity clothes. I went on a shopping spree and told myself that this is the one and only time during this entire pregnancy that I will buy clothes for pregnancy. I went to Kohl's and walmart and purchased 5 v-neck t-shirts, 3 pairs of yoga pants, 2 pairs of elastic waist jeans, and one pair of tennis shoes. None of them are labeled maternity. I spent about $120 all together and in combination with my hubby's dress shirts, I'm ready!

I have purchased zero photo 3457156-1
