"Must haves" list (before baby is here)

So I went into buybuybaby this past weekend and left in a cold sweat (not literally). I felt like I knew what I was doing & what I needed to buy, but then I saw everything all in one place (from floor to ceiling btw) and now I am in a bit of a panic. Did you have a list of some sort of what you really should have before the baby is here?

I know I need:

  • A car seat/infant seat

  • some newborn & 0-3mth clothes (how many?)

  • crib and/or bassinet

  • stroller

  • bottles (how the heck do you know which ones - I am a 'green' type of person?)

  • bath stuff for baby

  • after delivery care (for mom)

  • swaddles

  • diapers

I felt so overwhelmed & disappointed with the everything that they were selling there and how insanely overpriced it all was. I instantly felt the feeling of "I cant do this". It was an awful experience for me for some crazy reason.

When DH and I registered at Babies R Us they gave us a little booklet with all of their suggestions of things needed for when baby comes.  Does BBB offer that too?  I know what you mean about being overwhelmed.  I swear I'm still finding things that I'm like, oh crap do we need that?  Every item has it's own list of needs with it, like the thought of needing waterproof mattress covers for the crib, bassinet, changing pad, and the pack in play.....plus sheets/covers for all of those items.....then it's a a million batteries for the swings, bouncy seats, monitors, and toys.  Then bottles, nipples, pacifiers, burp cloths, bibs....I swear Mar....it's not easy.  Don't go alone again haha.

I know the feeling. :/

DH and registered at BBB and it took us most of the day to finish - it was brutal. The lady who helped us was amazing at explaining everything since all of it was pretty much foreign to the both of us.

I agree, BBB is crazy expensive, try walmart for bottles, nipples, swaddles, sheets, boppys, bath care, mom stuff and diapers etc. We finally went there (Walmart has been banned in our household for a year now, bad customer service experience) on Sunday and found a lot of the same products BBB has for less money.

I dont think shopping for a newborn really never ends but just as long as you have the basics you should be fine. Your list sounds great.

Not sure if youve had your baby shower yet but Im sure you'll receive a ton of clothes, so dont even worry about that. I know its hard not to shop for baby but I have a couple of repeat outfits I received from different family members AND some stuff I brought on my own.

We were truly blessed, we had 2 showers and we didnt need to spend any of our own money on anything (though we did on super cute clothes we found).

My next (and hopefully last) huge research project is finding the best breastpump that covered by our insurance. Fun!

I totally understand, Mar! That first "real" shopping experience can be extremely overwhelming. For some reason, baby shopping/registry building is not NEARLY as fun and carefree as the wedding registry was!!! There is just so much stress with every decision! {Hug}

A good friend of mine gave me this AMAZING list to use for our registry and/or when we went shopping. It was honestly such a blessing. Each item had a short explanation next to it with the reason I would need it/why she recommended it. It made it so much easier to determine what we would truly need. I was able to see what she recommended, and then I could add/delete things if I desired. It has made it so much easier for me to branch out on my own, too (ha!) I feel like I can make better decisions about what items would be useful v. what just seems cute or interesting. I really don't understand why there aren't more of those checklist-type lists floating around out there. I know the stores have plenty of items they "suggest", but they have a vested interest in pushing products, right? :-)

We started our Target registry last week and I'm still not sure what the "must have's" are!:(

it's so overwhelming being a first timer and having to pick this stuff! I always take whatever advice I can get from people I know that have done this before. Target also gave us a sheet of what to get and how many to get and I didn't even look at it till we got home haha so I'll have to add/delete some stuff online when I get a chance. We're gonna do a babies r us registry next, since we don't have a buybuybaby in our area. That one should be very interesting! Yikes :/ lol

I never even went to the BBB store.  I did all my research online first and just registered online.  Registering for baby is a continuous process.  As you talk to "been there, done that" moms and reassess your own lifestyle and needs, you begin to realize what are your own "must haves". When I was thinking of my must haves BEFORE baby arrives, I thought about the following 1) feeding 2) changing/bathing 3) travel 4) sleeping and 5) safety.

Anyhoo, I did some price comparisons and if you buy things at BBB using their 20% coupons, it works out to be the same prices as Amazon, which I find to be the cheapest place to get baby products.  Sometimes BBB sends out $5 off coupons from a purchase of $15, or 30% off, which is a better deal than the 20% coupons AND it can be combined ie, if you have two of those coupons, you can get $10 off a purchase of $30.  For some reason, I hate everything about Babies R Us.  The store, the website, everything.  And I do not thinks its cheaper than Amazon. The only positive is that it's located everywhere.
