No bloodwork done at first Dr. Appt. Normal?

So on Monday I went to my primary care physician to confirm pregnancy (4 weeks, woo hoo!) & all he did was a urine test, answered very basic questions & talked about prenatal vitamins. I thought for sure I would have my bloodwork done that same day as well...?

(My appointment with a new OBGYN (who my primary referred me to, since I didnt like my current OB's bedside manner) isnt until my 8th week 2/5.)

Is it normal to NOT do bloodwork during your initial appointment?

I didn't have any blood work my first appointment, I didn't even have a urine test done.

It was the first time I was seeing my OB and he did a full exam so I guess he confirmed my pregnancy that way.  I didn't have blood work done until closer to my 2nd trimester.

From what I read on this forum, it seems pretty usual to have a bloodwork to confirm pregnancy in the U.S.

But here, in Quebec (Canada), there isn't any bloodwork at first. Moreover, OB usually don't see you before you're 10-12 weeks along because of the risks for miscarriage that are high before this point. The only reason why I'm having bloodwork done this time around is because of my EP back in September.

So I would say don't worry you didn't have one. As long as you don't have serious pain or bleeding, you should be fine and bloodwork, even though informative and reassuring, can't change anything in the course of the pregnancy! And by 8th weeks, there's plenty of things your OB will be able to check!

Here in Switzerland it's like in Canada. Usually you see your OB only in week 12, for the reasons Pascale mentioned, unless you have any problems or heavy pains before.

Thanks! Makes sense. I swear, all I have been seeing (besides your answers here today) have been bloodwork confirmation. So I couldnt help but feel a little left out :(

At my first appt I was only 6 weeks and they only did the urine test. It was not till my 3rd visit(14-15 weeks) did they mention blood work. For the screening tests I had to fall between a certain gestation range and so that's why they waited.

Ditto MNM, don't feel left out that you didn't get a blood test.  It is emotionally exhausting!  Your OB probably will do some bloodworks on your first visit but it won't be the kind to confirm that you are pregnant.  It's more for genetic, STD, and other testing.

Ditto everyone else- totally normal! I didn't see my any doctor until I was 8 weeks. At that appointment they told me to have a blood draw done before my next appointment at 12 weeks.

I'm sure you'll get blood work done at your OB's office. My first appt was with my midwife at about 6 1/2 weeks and she ordered bloodwork that same day. Primary care probably just does the basics just to confirm and make sure you're doing everything that you need to until your first visit with your OB.

I didnt have bloodwork done till after I saw my midwife for the first time, so I had known I was pregnant for over a month before they did the routine stuff.  My very first appointment with the Dr he just verified I was preggo and I got my RH Factor shot and then I saw the midwife and she did a Pap and had me sign paperwork, then sent me for bloodwork like 2 or 3 weeks after that.

i didn't have a bloodwork confirmation, only urine.  the only blood i've had drawn so far was for some genetic testing!  and my OB doesn't draw blood in their office - i have to go elsewhere for that.

My Dr. took a urine sample to confirm the pregnancy before the u/s. We just saw my Dr on Mon (8w3d) she ordered full blood work (7 vials)! I think it just depends really...
