Not liking my OB?

My SIL happens to be an OB nurse w a certificate in midwifery and a master's in OB nurse education. I love and trust my SIL so I had asked her for a rec on her OB and made the appt w her favorite doc. And just like my acupuncturist, the OB is a very cold and somewhat abrasive lady! All facts and just business! I know I should look more at her track record (over her personality but come on! This is a very emotional experience for me and baby, can't we have a little bit of warmth, just a little? I don't want to offend my SIL but should I consider another OB? Or is this the strong personality I would want to have around when delivering? What do you think?

I have to tell you that my first appointment was nothing like I expected. I felt like they went right into what testing they suggest for the baby and a bunch of reading material. I assumed they would 1) confirm my pregnancy, 2) get excited with me!, 3) Ask more questions-get a little more personal.

After these things didn't happen I for a moment thought about jumping ship but while reading a pregnancy book the other night they pointed out that most OBs are super busy between delivering babies and appointments. I've decided to give the office another shot and see how I like it. Maybe you can hang on for one more appointment to see if you warm up to the OB and if not go looking for someone who makes you feel better. :)

I agree with milkgal. My sister is a midwifery and she also told me that most of the expecting mother which came to her are very unsatisfied with their OB's. But this is really normal as they are very busy. So like milkgal told I would give your OB a second change to see if your warm up with the OB.

FX for your next appointment! :)

I say give her a second chance and if still no warm and fuzzies switch!  You are going to spend a lot of time with your OB so it should be someone you actually like :)

Great advice from the ladies. You want someone who knows what she's doing, but also someone you feel comfortable with throught all your pregnancy. Give it another shot and if you're still not sure about her, it won't be too late to chage after the next appointment.

Ditto what the other girls said. OB's can be super busy so give it a few appointments then see what you think. Though if after 2 or 3 appointments you are still uncomfortable with her start looking around. Having a baby if a very personal, intimate experience and you want to feel comfortable with the person that is caring for you and your baby.

I love mine... She is not all rainbows and sunshine, but she is very compassionate and encouraging when the time is right...she and I have similar senses of humor....there are hugs and sometimes just jokes (and she swears too, which cracks me up, so I know she is comfortable around us). But she is no-nonsense and doesn't sugar-coat things....I just love her....good match for us!

For one of our blighted ovums, we saw a different doc, and she was very cold and emotionless....I requested not to see her anymore.

Ditto in giving her another chance or two only bc of her great track record. I switched obs about halfway through bc I wasn't comfortable with the hospital I was to deliver at in the city. So. Researched a dr who had a low csection rate and was described as soft spoken but wise. So glad I did!

Thanks ladies.  I'm going to have one more meeting with her, after my NT scan.  If I still don't get a good vibe from her then I will switch.
