Registering! When? Where? For What?

Since we're finding out the gender of our babe in less than two weeks, I've been thinking more about beginning to register... and, naturally, it's overwhelming! (yet exciting!)

If you've registered, where did you register? How many places? In store or online or both? When did you start registering?

For the mommas out there, anything ESSENTIAL that you suggest adding to the list? Or anything you found completely useless?

Sorry for all of the questions & thanks for any advice! :)

Oh, and happy daddy and daddy-to-be day!!!

Haha I started my registries almost right away online. I put only essentials and gender neutral items. I did one at BRU and one at Target. We actually just went in store at BRU today to add a few girly things and test out a few things like the stroller and swing :). We decided on the Britax B-Agile travel system.

That's a good idea, Dennys! I was thinking of starting online (adding the essentials) and then going in store to look at some of the big items and register for more. I like the idea of having both in store and online options available... my grandma, for instance, would definitely not be ordering online lol.

We registered at Amazon & Target! I did everything online just a few weeks ago :/ I referenced Lucie's List ( http://www.lucieslist.com/) for the essentials since I was so overwhelmed with what I needed :)

I'd say just make sure it's all done about a month before your baby shower and you should be good. There's no rush to get it all done right away so you can take your time with it :) We did our registries at BRU and Target and ultimately we liked both but of course both had their pros and cons. BRU has a much better online registry as far as managing it goes, but I find that more people shop at Target so I made sure to scan most of the little essential stuff there. My only advice would be to register for little to no clothes because a.) stores' inventory is constantly changing so certain things may not be in stock when the time comes for people to buy and b.) most of what you get at your shower will be clothes regardless of whether or not you register for any. I think the only clothes I scanned were a couple packs of plain white onesies, socks, and a pair of pants and we still ended up with more than enough clothes to last him till he's at least 3-6 months old :) And all of the clothes we got were so adorable, but one of them kinda looks a little girly so he probably won't wear that one haha. Oh and don't be shy when it comes to the bigger items. We actually didn't have to buy our crib, crib set, travel system, high chair, pack n play, and the rock n play sleeper because we got all those things as gifts! Like Mar said, that lucies list really is helpful in explaining all those items you need so you can choose more easily. Good luck and have fun!

Thank you, ladies!! I will definitely look at lucies list - I've been scouring the internet for something exactly like that. :) Good to know the pros and cons of BRU and Target, too. I actually worked at BRU for a little while in college, and I remember telling all of the registerers to not register for any clothing for exactly the reasons you said, futuremrs! Thanks again!

Jenny - I registered at BRU and Target and had a very similar experience to futuremrsgamboa - most items were purchased from Target. We also used Lucie's List as a guide, as well as advice from friends and family. We did most of the registry online because it was a bit overwhelming in the store. But I definitely agree with looking at strollers and car seats in the store!

One tip that may be helpful for you or anyone else still facing the registry fun: I registered at Amazon, but kept it private for DH and me. I added all of the items from our BRU and Target registries, and entered an earlier due date. Amazon offers a 10% completion discount similar to some of the bricks and mortar stores; they email it to you 30 days prior to your due date. We live in a small town and trekking to BRU and Target for our remaining items wasn't possible after our showers :-( BUT! Doing the Amazon registry allowed us to purchase all of our remaining items and we saved so much money thanks to Amazon's cheaper prices/no tax, free shipping and the completion discount. Plus they didn't have any restrictions for the discount (certain brands or products). It was fantastic! Just an idea to consider :-)

Ditto to Lucie's List, and the other thing that helped me a TON, was the Baby Bargains book. That was a huge help for me.

We registered at buybuybaby and BRUS after we found out the gender even though we do have gender neutral items on our lists. I started the registries online and we finished in store. That was a time saver so that we didn't have to do all the paperwork when we got to the stores. Just grab the scanner and go! :) I also agree with not registering for clothes. People love a reason to buy cute baby clothes!

Great idea Deb, I might have to do that myself! I do have items already on a wish list that I can transfer to a registry. :)

For Alexis I registered at Target and BRU and we started our registries pretty much as soon as we found out it was a girl.

For Hunter I only registered at BRU, we had a sprinkle and I wanted to 10% off coupon you get around your dd for the items remaining on your registry.

Something I love that we bought and used for alexis and now its what Hunter has been sleeping in every night and naps in during the day... http://www.mamasaywhat.com/real-review-fisher-price-rock-n-play-sleeper/

@Chrsty: We have that set up in our bedroom for the first few months of LO sleeping in our room, too! I have given it as a shower gift to other people for the last few years and everyone LOVES it. So I figured we had to have it, too! Lol

And ditto Ashley! We also used the BB book. Very helpful, especially for things like furniture, mattresses, etc.

We registered at BuyBuyBaby and Amazon.  Half the stuff we wanted were cheaper at Amazon and the other half were only available at BBB.  We also had baby shower guests buy baby books instead of cards so in order to avoid dupes, we registered for a variety of books on Amazon.

RnP is a must! As is the swing! Also several different kinds of swaddles.

yes, the RnP sleeper is awesome.  LO loves it.  but also watch out for flat head, which was the biggest complaint on Amazon.  if you're doing tummy time diligently it shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you all so much!!! I checked out Lucie's List per your recommendations the other day and already have some great ideas. I'll have to check out the Baby Bargains book, too! And yes, Debbie, that is genius!

For now I think we plan on registering at Target and BRU, and maybe a small little list a PB. I have heard nothing but awesome things about the RnP - but I already have an Arm's Reach co-sleeper. Do you think it would be too redundant to get the RnP too? I've heard such great things, I want it! Haha.

Also - weird question, but does anyone know if you can keep registrys "secret" for a while? Like, not searchable? We find out the gender next Thursday but aren't revealing the gender to everyone until a BBQ on July 20th and I'd love to keep it a surprise until then - but I'd also love to start my registries.

I keep the RnP in the living room as a daytime sleeper for naps but at night, he sleeps in bed with us. Where would you keep LO during the day, if not in the co-sleeper?

As for secret registries, I only know of Amazon that has that feature.

Jenny - I'm pretty sure both BRU and Target also have the option to keep your registry private until you are ready to reveal. On Target's site, I think it is under "Edit Settings". You can opt to hide your registry in search results. Same for BRU. HTH!
