Vitamin K & Stem Cells - Advice Please....

Hey Ladies,

Just a few questions...

What are your thoughts of the Vitamin K jab for a newborn? Is it something you did? The hospital has advised that they recommend it, however, "concern was raised by a small study in Avon that there might be a link between the development of cancel in childhood and receipt of an injection of Vitamin K" - so now I'm sceptical. Were you told the same and did your LO have the vaccine?

Also - were you asked whether you wanted to keep the unbillical cord for stem cells?  Apparently it can help in future if your LO gets cancer (just the thought makes me so sad).  Can I ask if you opted for it?  It costs thousands here and it only gets stored for 25 years so I'm not sure what to do...

TIA XX

We are planning on the Vita K shot - it's to help with blood clotting. There are alternatives you can potentially ask for if your hospital has it orally rather than in a shot. I asked my Dr. about it and she recommends it (she explained it a lot better and more in detail) but it was enough to make my mind up that we should get it.

Our birth class instructor who is a cert. Doula suggested to do the cord blood banking if you can afford it. However from what she's researched she stated it'll help future kids, not this kid. We aren't doing it, so instead we're doing delayed cord clamping.

HTH!

We decided to go for the K shot at birth.

Deciding on saving the cord blood was hard for me. They really pull you in with the thought of helping your current LO in the future (which in some it has) but for the most part it would only serve for reserach purposes. After talking to my midwife she suggested against it. She said there were very few illnesses it would cure and most of them were somewhat rare. So, in the end we decided against it.

I do know that some places do have a public bank where you can donate to but we do not have one locally. If we did, I would have done that route.

 Ditto the other ladies :-)

We also opted to give him the shot.

I would have considered the cord blood banking if it hadn't been so expensive :-/ I agree that a public bank option would have been great!

We will be doing the Vitamin K shot if we have a boy for the circmcision (they won't do it otherwise).

We are also cord-blood banking.  While there aren't many diseases that can be cured NOW, there is constant research and new treatments are being developed every couple of years.  It is worth it to me to have that available =)

My boys had the K shot, and we didn't consider the stem cell bank.

There are so many decisions to make aren't there?!? My brother & SIL are going through the nightmare with my nephew at the moment - its so hard to know what is right!!

I'm very happy because we only have one more shot (happening this Tuesday!) and then all the boys immunisations are done until they're teenagers - I'm so happy that its almost over!
