Budget Savvy Brides: $5K and Under

Save on your cake

We all in the end want a beautiful cake. The cake I wanted was 600.00, but the closer my wedding came I decided I didnt need to pay 600.00 for tasty cake. I opted for a local grocery store cake (PUBLIX). I gave them a picture of my inspiration and had them make me a two tier for 150.00, I then went to sams and bought a sheet cake fro 20.00. This allowed me to save lots of money and feed 100 guest cake.

Inspiration & the real cake:

YES!  I KWYM FI and i have been talking and because we are on a tight budget also i think that we might get our cake done at like H-E-B or like Albertsons  if we give them like a pic of what we want they can do something similar and it will be way cheaper... what do you guys think...  something like this but a bride a groom topper....

Gorgeous and great idea! I am DIY minicupcakes (my avatar was a test run) in my colors and I am doing white, chocolate and yellow in tiffany blue, ivory and brown frosting with various sprinkles to match. Not only will they be yummy but they are made with love! Then the top tier of the cupcake tower will be a fondant-covered "dummy" so we can "cut" the cake which I will make also and cover in tiffany blue fondant with some ivory/chocolate decorations. I am excited about doing it! 300 mini cupcakes a day or two ahead of time and decorating them the morning of. The dummy will be made a few days in advance. If you are crafty, give it a go! All supplies, etc. less than $100 and not only that but my daughter, soon to be stepdaughter and I can enjoy the cupcake pans, coloring, decorating tips, etc. for many more cakes and cupcakes to come!

Another way to save is to order a fake cake.  Looks like the thing though it is actually made of styrofoam covered in fondant.  If done correctly, no one can tell the difference.  Just order sheet cakes for the guests.  We plan to do this, so much cheaper.

I would have DIYed my cake if I had the time, but I knew I wouldn't, so friends of ours made our cake as their wedding gift to us.  They're not professionals, but I just wanted a good-tasting cake that was simple and pretty.  I wanted a lemon cake, and the first recipe they tried was horrible.  They ended up using a box mix and making the icing, and it was delicious and moist!  And to top it off, it was pretty!  The cost of materials was less than $100, but it was very time-consuming.
