DH and Decor

Does your DH care how you decorate or do you both have to agree or compromise on the little decorative touches.  We compromised on all of the major purchases like our kitchen cabinets, flooring etc.  I put my foot down on the countertop that he wanted because I hated it and I guess he gave in to the countertop that I wanted but now he agrees that it looks awesome.  However, a lot of my decorative items he doesn't like.  I had a furnished place before we moved in together and he pretty much just had a bed, a couch and a table.  So, instead of buying new things I'm using what I already had and still really like.  I bought two cute leaf patterned chairs that matched perfectly with everything else and he really doesn't like them.   Our styles are just so different but I wonder if most couples are and if the husband just gives in most of the time?  I have this star mirror that I bought a few years ago from Pier 1 that I absolutely love and DH hates it so he only let me put it up on this one wall at the back of the house where it's hardly ever seen. :/

My hubby gives in most of the time... I'll tell you the first time I bought a few throw pillows for our apartment was sort of a "fight"... he thought they were too girly!!  That was before we were engaged though... I just kindly, calmly explained that if his friends were to ever come over, they would surely realize it were ME not HIM purchasing these girly touches.  Over the years, we've decorated more and more... especially now that we're in our house!  I think he's come to realize that a woman makes a house a home. :)  Now if I were to tell him I'm painting our bedroom pink and doing a "French Boudoir" theme, he would still freak.  LOL  So the way I add my girly touches is to do it with a less conspicuous color scheme.  I still get to say we have a "French Boudoir" themed Master, and he gets to say it's grey and "blue" (aqua). ;)

Ok!  Glad I'm not the only one.  He does have his own space but I find myself trying to creep into to that...it's so hard for me to give up total control.  We each have our own bathroom that we just renovated and he got to pick everything out for his as I did mine.  It is such a man's bathroom but I'm fine with it...we are still waiting for the toilet to come in because it's a special order color lol...but I'll post pics when it's finished.  The family room is technically his although I did change his mind on colors and pick out the wood stove.  I think what I try to do is make suggestions then let him think he's the one picking things out but really I am... :)  I think he's coming around a lot though...he's not really into color on the walls and so far I've managed to paint a color on the walls for all of the rooms we've done so far...he's said in the past he would prefer to live in a house with 'ultra bright white paint' on the walls.  I'm still surprised he was ok with me painting that giant tree in our dining room. lol

Thanks Amanda!  He says he likes chairs with armrests! lol

Allie- I'm the same way with pillows...I have a few really girly pillows on these two chairs that sit in the corner of my dining room that I won't give up...they are pink, blue and green lol...he hates them!

I used to wish my DH let me do whatever, but I've found out in the past three years he has some pretty good ideas. His decor ideas come more with taking down walls, paint colors and big pieces of furniture. I'm allowed to add the little touches as long as he gets to nix anything he doesn't like. So far its work out pretty good.

Right now we are in a kind of battle over what to do in the kitchen. He wants to paint the cabinets white while I want them dark. Stay tuned to see who wins =]

He let's me do whatever I want!!  He always ends up saying it looks good ;)  If he lived there alone there would still be all white walls, vinyl flooring in the kitchen, laundry room, powder room etc, there would still be laminate countertops & white appliances & carpet in the dining room and he would still be sleeping on a futon and making due with his college couches :/  The only time he ever has any input is when a significant amount of $ is involved LOL!

Ditto Mel! I have free reign with decor choices - but I do try to at least act like I'm involving him in my decision making... For example, while at Lowe's looking at an Edison light fixture I'd been eyeing:

Me: (pointing) I've been drooling over this light fixture for a few weeks. What do you think?

DH: Really? Ew, that's hideous.

Me: You're nutso. It's fabulous.

DH: Well, if you love it, get it. You know I don't care enough to object strongly. I may not even notice it until it's been up for a month.

... so, yeah. That's pretty much the way it goes in our house. Lol!

Furniture is another story... Everything has to be "comfort tested" by him. My old sofa (which pre-dated him!!) was so beautiful and perfectly scaled, but he bitched about it for 4 years until I finally caved and let him pick something "comfortable." I thought the other one was plenty comfy, but I guess I don't know jack :) Now we have a ginormous sectional :/

Ditto Mel & Gator LOL - I tell DH my plans, and he just smiles at me and says "yeah, that sounds good". He does end up liking what I like though!! The only thing I've had a hard time talking him into is white trim/cabinets. He likes the "natural wood" look, and while I do too... NOT all over the house!! I want something exciting and fresh and modern :)
