Car titles... both names?

DH and I each came into the marriage with our own car. We're both insured to drive both cars, but I don't know if we should put both of our names on the titles or leave the titles in my name and his name, respectively. Anybody have insight into this? Does it really matter, or only matter if one of us dies so the other one will get the car?

Oh, good question! We're in the same boat. I'd check to see if the associated costs go up. I wonder if it matters in the whole "What if he's driving my car and wrecks it, because he drives like a freaking lunatic?" way.

We only have my car, but FI is insured to drive it. We are going to keep it in my name just for simplicity since I didn't think it will affect anything. Even if I die *knock on wood* everything would go to him since he is my legal spouse. I could be completely wrong though...does anyone else have knowledge on the subject?

LadyHope are your cars both paid off, or do you have loans?  DH and I both bought new cars 1.5 years ago before we were sharing finances.  Therefore we only put our own names on the titles and we took our car loans on our own.  We are doing accelerated payments, so I think with the separate "debt" we'll keep each others names off the titles.  Plus its nice as a woman to still have the chance to maintain my good credit score.

In terms of insurance, we've been driving each others cars for a while now.  We won't go after joint car insurance until next year when we're both up for renewal.  Right now we're locked in with our home insurance waiting for repairs from a freak hail storm, but that's another story.  Anyway, even though we don't have joint car insurance we're still protected under the others.

My car is paid off, his isn't. I'm guessing if down the line we buy a new car together we'd put both our names on the title, just don't know if we should change the existing titles...

You just reminded me that we need to get our insurance sorted. At the moment I'm not insured to drive DH's car and vice versa. I hate dealing with insurance companies, I'm so useless with it all :(

It's been easier for us to just do everything separately. I've financed and registered my car in my name; he's done the same for his truck... I don't know if there is an advantage or disadvantage to that.

If one of us was to die, I guess it would be nice if the other wasn't strapped with an additional car payment (*er... look at me, looking on the "bright" side!* lol). But I'm not sure how that would work - are we responsible for individual debts in the event of death of a spouse? Any lawyers in this joint?

...basically I'm no help at all. Sooo... Yeah.

DH and I both have our own cars which we are still paying the loans for.... when DH went and bought his jeep (this was before we were married or even engaged) I actually co signed on the loan (so my name is on his title), but I only did so because by my co signing I would help him get a better interest rate. BUT when I got my new car, DH and I were already married.... HOWEVER, his name is not on the loan (i.e. or the title) because I got a better interest rate without him being on it. So really we went with how we'd get the best rate for the loan as opposed to having to both be on each others car titles.
