"Permanent Address"

I know some of you are already homeowners so you don't have this issue... I don't know if anyone else has run into this.

DH and I signed a lease on a new apartment a couple of days ago. The rental lady wanted us to each fill out an application. We had to list our current landlord, previous landlord, etc. There was also a blank for a "Permanent Home Address". Afterward it said (Usually this is your parent's address.)

I get it--this is a college town, and the majority of renters are college students. However, we are a MARRIED COUPLE. We don't go running home to mommy and daddy for spring break and the summer--this is going to be our HOME. Our only home. The rental lady still made us put our parents' addresses down!! I think she could tell I was pissed (I had a LOOK on my face, I'm sure!) because she was trying to explain how sometimes the forwarding address doesn't work and they want to be sure they can get our deposit back to us, etc.

What if we were 30 years old? Would we still have to list our parents then??

Ugh, the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not worried about the apartment... I'm sure it will be great. I think they're really dedicated to having high quality tenants. I just hate the implication that my mom and dad should still be receiving my mail! :P We're a married couple--wherever we live together is where WE LIVE, all the time. Period.

That would bug me too! I would have written something smarta$$ in the blank, just to make a point! I've never had to do that when I've rented (single, coupled, whatever)... and I live in a total college town too. :/

:/ that's awkward. I'm sure the lady knew it and was just following policy. But that does beg the question of what if you were older, had kids, were from out of town, etc.

Yeah that is really annoying. I would say it is probably because of the college students, that would be pretty standard on a lease in our city too. I guess landlords/ladies just haven't caught up with the financial situation at the moment which means more and more married couples are renting.

What, are you supposed to have a P.O. box somewhere because you're renters?? We had the same thing on our lease, now that I think of it! :)

Bizarre.  I haven't had to fill out an apartment application but I know it's on some biz apps like bank accounts, etc...but I am always at my permanent address! ;)
