Best beach in SoCal

FI and I will be taking our engagement photos in a few weeks and we want it to be on the beach... but we don't want it to be exclusively "on the sand" type photos, as it'll get pretty boring after awhile. You know... under the pier, walking into the sunset on the beach, etc.

I want to spice it up a bit... maybe cliff shots with either an ocean or city lights view. And it'd be great if the beach had lots of quirky stuff we could use as props. Like a cool red phone booth, or a place where we could rent those cutesy bicycles with "U" shaped handles... cool, unique stuff that can truly depict the southern California lifestyle. I'd even like some shots of FI and I with lots of blurred out people in the background on the strand or something.

In any case... I'm only familiar with Hermosa beach b/c I use to walk the strand all the time. But that won't give me the cliff shots I want. Malibu will give me beach and cliff shots but nothing quirky or fun...and it's usually secluded.

If anyone has suggestions on a great beach with a variety of props and backdrops, please let me know! I'm especially interested to find out if any beaches in OC fit the description I'm looking for! Help, native souther Californians! >_

with the sun setting so early these days, i don't think weekday is really an option for us. and venice beach... haha... that place is packed with "unique" people :-p i think overall, hermosa beach is more my style... maybe i should just scour the hermosa/manhattan area in th next 2 weeks and take photos of potential photo spots.

I've seen some beautiful epics taken at Manhattan Beach with the pier in the background. With the weather cooling down it'll less busy. When the sun sets, you could get some really pretty shots walking along the Strand or under the pier with the sun peeking through. I'm sure you can achieve the same at Huntington Beach.

This site has some gorgeous shots of the South Bay beaches.

Good luck!

I'm partial to Laguna Beach since I grew up with it. It's got the cliffs you're looking for with a few terraces along the cliff-top pathway and a some grassy areas as well if you want that. I'd recommend checking it out. Go just north of Main Beach (which is what you'll get dumped out on if you take Laguna Canyon Rd). You can start at Las Bristas and take a nice walk north w/ your fiance to see if it suits you. Tons of great views of the water, the coastal cliffs and main beach.

We got married on Topanga Beach in Malibu and it has a lot of privacy, some rocks, palm and large oak-type trees on the beach, surfers in the water, it's a beautiful location! You can see photos on my profile. Have fun! Meg
