civil and catholic church ceremony

okay.. whats the difference between my FI and I marrying civilly (like before our church wedding) and then getting married at the church (which isn't until next year?) if we do civil first, are we still able to marry in the catholic church?

TIA!

i think that if you are civilly married, you're legally married but it's not recognized by the church. you should be able to get married in the church and then that would be the sacrament of marriage. a friend of mine is doing this too. she and her DH got married last year in hawaii and then are having a church wedding this year. she did not mention that they had any trouble with the church.

HTH...

they ask if you've had previous marriages before, but that usually means to people other than each other. if it's the same couple i don't think there would be an issue. i'd check with your priest just in case, or any priest if you don't want to jeopardize anything with your current priest.

hi hula, FI & I are going to have a civil ceremony next month to get our paperwork squared away, and are having our church wedding in August. you shouldn't have a problem though the church does have many other hoops you need to jump through - confirmation certificates, marriage workshop, form this form that... and miss Q is right, their concern is if you've been married in the church to someone else before. do check with your priest tho.

I think I can provide some insight. DH and I were married civily in 2002. We are renewing our vows in the Catholic church in 2009.

Depending on your specific church, they may or may not recognize your civil marriage.

At first, our church really didn't want to recongize our marriage and therefore wanted us to go through the counceling stuff that engaged people do even though we have been married for almost 6 YEARS NOW. Now, they are going to recongize it and we don't have to deal with that stuff.

The church will call it an "Affirmation" which just means that you are reaffirming your love and vows.

Like I said, each Catholic church is different, so discuss this with your priest.

hula - this is what we are doing...

our hawaii dw this august is a civil ceremony which is recognized legally, but not by the church, and i will not be granted the sacrament

our church wedding is next aug (we're date twins 'member??) and it will be a "convalidation" ceremony, thus rendering our union as "valid" within the catholic church and me receiving the sacrament of marriage

I'm not catholic, so I can't help on that front, but I was married by civil ceremony in April and will be marry in front of God and family in October.  My pastor was totally fine with it.  Like the others have said, talk to them and find out!  I know sometimes the catholic church can be pretty sticky about things and it varies drastically from church to church.

Good luck!!  :)
