wedding reception dj

Any advice on choosing a good dj? How much should one typically budget for a decent, non-cheesy, dj professional? We're on a budget and the quotes of $1,200 seem a bit high. Is that right??

I was quoted $850 for a DJ that I heard at my friend's wedding. They were good and even added some fun extras (games) to the package. One of the reasons I liked them after meeting with them professionally was that they were focused on being exactly what we wanted. Don't like certain songs? No problem. And when it comes to requests, the DJs will ask permission in case the song is not what we want. But I'd definitely ask for referrals, to see if other couples thought the price was worth it.

Yeah, we found a DJ that is about $800 for 4 hours...and then $50 for each additional hour...and he sent us a list of all his music, and we get to go through it and pick what we want played and dont want played, plus we get to pick something like 30 songs not on his list to add if we want. But we talked with him and we are going off of our meeting with him and recs on here and other bride sites.

I was quoted for $1300 for 4 hours. I don't even know if the guy is that good. But due to a tight budget we opt to do an Ipod DJ by my brother in law

You have to decide whehter you want a passive dj or active dj. Some dj's talk consantly, like when you are cutting the cake. Some just play music.

Another thought just occured to me, often times the DJs work closely with coordinators to manage the flow and timeline of the reception. So you could ask the coordinator or location spokesperson for recommendations.
