Advice for a first timer?

Hi girls!! DH and I have been in a huge healthy lifestyle makeover since our wedding. I'd really like to add yoga to my makeover, for the peacefulness of it all, and hopefully a little toning. I do not know anyone in "real" life that practices, so I am kind of lost on where to begin. I've started looking to try and find a studio close by. Is there anything I can do/should do to get ready to start?

I actually think you could jump right in. :) You can start with "slower" classes (e.g. a beginner's hatha class) to get more used to the poses.  And if you ever want more challenging classes, you can go for faster pace ones later on.

many yoga studios have beginner classes, usually held on the weekends.  if you are member of a gym like NY Sports Club, anyone can take the yoga class but be sure to let the instructor know that you are a beginner so that he or she can keep a closer eye on you.  another alternative is to buy or rent a beginner's yoga dvd.  Its good bc you can go at your own pace but still a challenge bc you won't have an instructor to let you know what you are doing wrong.

I found that in the very beginning, some yoga classes were NOT relaxing.  I was caught up trying to learn the positions correctly and even thought it looks easy, it can feel very challenging on your muscles.  but once you find the right class, instructor, etc, it can be very stress relieving.
