Had a doctor's visit...here are my options

We'll I saw the doctor today. Basically I had two options. Start getting the fertility shot to help boost my ovulation and chances of getting pregnant....OR wait a month and get the Hysterosalpingogram (HSG).

This was tough, I'm still wondering if I made the right decision. But I decided to do the HSG and make sure my ovaries are open before I even start trying the next step. I mean whats the point of getting my hopes up if the ovaries are shut. I think I'm ovulating, but we shall see.

I feel really upset about having to wait another month to get some 'shot' help, but I think it's better to get the bad news over with now than later. So here I go I have to wait another 2 weeks till the HSG test...sigh.

Has anyone gone through this? any advise on what to expect or what to ask?

P.S. I was so bummed I picked up not 1 but 2-cupcakes (this is totally unlike me)

I had an HSG.  I had been temping for months, I had blood tests for FSH, LH, and Progesterone levels at differetn times in my cycle to be sure I had a good ovarian reserve and was ovulating, and DH had a SA.  Everything on paper said we should be able to get pregnant.  I knew at that point that my tubes were blocked - there was no other explanation.

I was right - both tubes were blocked.  My dr is the one who actually did the procedure so she asked if I wanted her to try to unblock them right then by increasing the water pressure in my uterus.  I figured it couldn't hurt - DH and I had already ruled out doing any type of surgery or IVF so it was my only chance.  The left tube flushed fairly quickly once the pressure was increased.  The right required quite a bit more pressure but also cleared.  I conceived 6 days later when I ovulated (confirmed by temping) and I'm now 30 weeks pregnant.

My HSG seems to have been less common than others - first, my dr used sterile water for the procedure and an ultrasound.  Most others seem to still use the contrast dye and an x-ray.  Second, my dr performed the procedure, rather than a tech of some sort which I've heard is who usually does it.

I do have to ask, though - you said you "think" you are ovulating, but your dr wants to give you fertility shots without confirming that you are?  JMO, but that seems reckless on your dr's part.....I would ask at least for a progesterone test to ensure that your levels show you are ovulating.  If you are and take the shot, there are risks involved that shouldn't be taken lightly.

I hope the HSG gives you some answers.

That's an interesting and inspiring story Claire27. We have done all those tests already, I even had a vaginal ultrasound.

I have been doing the ovulation kits at home and she asked about it again to see if I was ovulating, which I said, I was (that's what the strip indicated).

I think the same thing, we are healthy and the test results all cleared...so there must be something up with my tubes. I've been reading up on HSG, the doc said it was uncomfortable, but it didn't sound like it would hurt.  And she will be using the dye & xray...but she said the dye is much safer now and there's a small chance I could have an allergic reaction.

I know the 2 weeks seems like a drag, but I am sure time will fly, questions, have you ever confirmed O by tempting, OPK can be unreliable, and did your DH have an SA? Tell us how the HSG went...

From what I understand, if your tubes are clear, then yes, the HSG is just uncomfortable.  If they are blocked like mine were?  Completely different story - I was in so much pain that I went into shock.  What should have been a 30 min appt turned in to two and a half hours while I recovered.  And I've had ovarian cysts that ruptured and sent me to the ER - the pain I had from the cysts was NOTHING compared to the HSG - make sure you take someone who can drive you.  I didn't and even after I recovered enough to walk I wasn't sure I could drive for a bit.

I would do it again though - every time this baby kicks, I can tell you I would do it again!

MKCalderon, I've been temping for several months, that didn't work...my body's crazy. OPK seems to be more on the dot for me but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the insight Claire27.

I had an HSG and it's no big deal. Once you get it and you know for sure everything is open believe me it's such a relief.

MK Calderon, I had the HSG done, it took like 5 days to stop bleeding...I didn't get preggo after that. Doctor said they are open :) yay.... So now we're doing the Clomid, starting this week. I do have a question...what day to you start counting from when they say on day 5 of your cycle...I started on friday, do I count Friday or do I start from Saturday?? Any idea anyone.

I have my moments of sadness, like yesterday I found out my half bro (little bro-only 20 or so) just had a baby. Argh! Not even married. Sigh. I'm a jelous mess lately.

@PSA this all sounds really promising, I'm keeping my FX for a BFP soon!

You start counting on the day you started AF, so it sounds like Friday to me.
