What's the next step?

DH and I have been trying for about 6+ months with no luck. We have been married over 2 years and have never used protection in those 2 years. It worries me that in those 2 years we never even had a surprise baby. What should be our next step? I know I ovulate from taking test every month but I'm worried something might be wrong with DH or even me still.

*HUGS*

Bear with me, but I can't remember if you are doing anything besides OPKs? Are you temping? If not, by a rough estimate of when you are Oing, how long is your LP?

These are questions your dr will ask.

Call your OB/GYN and tell them you want to set up a consultation with your dr because you've been trying to get pregnant for X months. My dr asked if I was sure about when I was Oing. I was able to give her my charts with my O happening every month between CD 13 and CD 16 with a consistent LP of 14-15 days. She followed up with blood work on CD 4 to check LH and FSH levels early in the cycle. More blood work on CD 22 to confirm O and my progesterone level. DH then scheduled a SA and when he came back good on that I went ahead and had an HSG to verify whether or not my tubes were open. My dr flat out said she would not waste my time or money with Clomid or Femara without confirming both DH's SC and quality and whether or not my tubes were open....this is just my dr's protocol though, but it should give you a place to start!

I'm sorry to hear that things aren't happening like you would hope.  Don't lose faith :-)

Are you temping and charting?  You can buy a basal body thermometer (mine was $20) and download the Fertility Friend app for free.  Charting can show you what your cycles are like, and can help idenitify possible problems women can face.  If you aren't that familiar with it, the Taking Charge of Your Fertility (TCOYF) book is a little overwhelming at first glance, but has tons of useful info if you read it in small bits.  I think the data from temping/charting can be valuable when going to meet with doctors, etc.  Some ladies on here also swear by Pre-Seed (if your CM (cervical mucus) needs a little help).

Otherwise, I'd book an appointment with your doctor.

Thanks for all the feedback! I think my first step will be going to see my OB/GYN and see if she recommends a specialist in the area. Should I bring DH to this visit to talk about what has been going on or should I go alone?

I don't temp but I do ovulate on the 17th or 18th day of my cycle every month. I have a long cycle averaging around 30 days. My LP is fairly long at 18. Could that be an issue?

Hello Emily, if you aren't temping there isn't really any way to confirm ovulation except blood test. If you are just using the Opk's they detect the LH surge which should trigger ovulation but it is possible to have a surge without ovulating. Also ovulation usually occurs 12-36 hours after that surge but I know with mine I get a positive opk 2-3 days before O. Remeber that the luteal phase starts the day AFTER ovulation. So if you are getting a positive OPK on CD 17-18 you could be ovulating a day later (cd 18-19) and if you have 30 day cycle that is sn 11-12 day luteal phase. I have read that at least 10 days is required for pregnancy but 12-14 days is considered normal. I would recommend temping to get a clearer picture of your cycle and deffinately talk to you dr. Or see a specialist

I was having trouble with the LP math, too, but couldn't figure out why!  Thanks KWoodrn for putting the details out =)

My fertility doctor told me that whenever you aren't using protection, you're trying to have a baby.

With that said in reality... You've been trying 2.5 years with no luck.

I'd go to a RE and get some blood work done, maybe an HSG and def get the DH to do a SA.

After that long I would deffinately see a specialist. RE's have access to equiptment and knowledge that is out of most ob/gyn's scope. However, if you haven't had a normal check up in the last year that would be a good start.

Are you due for an annual with your gyn?  If so, I'd start there...my RE required me to have my gyn send them my most recent pap and it had to be within a year.  If you've already been within 12 months, go right to an RE.  I feel like I should've seen an RE long before I did.  I went to my gyn and talked to her...she put me on clomid without any monitoring which is useless.

My DH asked his Dr. for a SA...and they sent him to the lab.  We had that taken care of before I went to the RE.

What does an RE do?
