Cake Balls

So I am making Cake Balls for a baby shower I'm throwing in a few weeks. I'm looking to recreate this look (but no butterflies since that looks super complicated)...

So I am making photo 2023332-1

My question for you ladies is how do I pipe the chocolate onto the balls? Do I just melt it like normal and then put it in a pastry bag with a piping tip on it? I'm scared that it will be super hot and melt the whole bag. Do I even use chocolate? Can I use normal frosting? Will it harden if I let it cool?

AHHH!! So many questions! I'm for sure going to do a run through before hand. Just needed some words of wisdom before I tackle this! TIA!!

i'm making some right now! in the fridge. i'm not sure about the decorating but i would use regular frosting and pipe with super narrow/fine tip to get that design in your inspiration picture (which is super cute btw...!). then let it set in the fridge...a trial would be good.

i'm making cake pops...so still gotta stick the lolli stick in there and dip in choco coating. will post if they turn out. won't post if they dont turn out :)  so we'll see!

To do the piping, I'd use regular chocolate or candy melts.  Just put them in a disposable piping bag or ziplock bag and warm them gently until they're melted enough to pipe.  Then snip a tiny hole off the corner of the bag and use it to pipe (I wouldn't use a tip).  Practice a little on wax paper or a paper plate or something first before piping on the cake balls just so you can get your technique right.

They're going to be so cute!

Chi-Those came out so cute!! Did you use a meloon baller or just your hands?

LauraSweet-Thanks for the advice. Would you melt the chocolate in a double boiler and then put into the bag? Will this melt the bag? Im so scared of this part!! lol!

thx! jr - i just used my hands. i dunno if the melon baller will pack it tightly enuf, but lemme know if it works...less mess, the better. i used my whisk to crumble up the cooled off cake - less messy and worked like a charm!

You can use a double boiler if you want.  The chocolate shouldn't get hot enough to melt the bag.  Chocolate is very moody, so you don't want it very hot.  I tend to just use my microwave, but I use it at 50% power and for short intervals.  The reason I recommended not using a tip is that then if it starts to cool off and solidify in the bag, you can pop it back in the microwave for a few seconds to get it going again.  You can't do that if you have a metal tip in the bag.
