There's really no such thing as "fondant buttercream".  They are two totally different things.  However, with a lot of skill and patience, it's possible to make buttercream very smooth, so that it almost looks like fondant.  Crumb coating properly and a hot clean knife are essential...your friend can probably find tutorials online. :)

I asked a friend of mine who makes and sells decorated cakes.  She told me the consistency from store bought is better, which is important and hard to achieve if you make it from scratch, unless you have a lot of experience.  The color won't be as white either.

I see a bunch of fondant recipe online so it shouldn't be hard to find.  From what I saw on PW forums though, few people like the taste and texture of fondant, so there's probably nothing wrong with the fondant you bought.

Unless you want to make fancy decorations which require fondant, you should be able to get away with buttercream.  I chose buttercream for my wedding cake too because I didn't like the taste of fondant.

Sometimes the fondant is also stuck to the cake with buttercream frosting and people just peel it off. :P  (I think that buttercream "glue" is becoming the norm, although traditionally fondant is adhered to the cake with an apricot glaze.)
