DIY Wedding Challenge 2010: Beach Themed Invitation

With the cost of wedding invitations and save the dates I decided to make my own. These messages in a bottle invitations are sure to surprise your guests.

You will need:
-Empty beer bottles
- Your wedding invitation (make sure of the sizing to ensure that it will fit in the bottle)
- Sand
-Ribbon or rafia
- Shells small enough to fit in the bottle
-Drink umbrella
-a cork big enough to fit the bottle opening
-hole punch

Note: You may put whatever items in your bottle that you wish to, this was what I used in mine. You could even get colored sand to match your wedding colors. The possibilities are endless.

First you will need to remove the labels from your bottles. The best way to do this is to peel them off and wash them with hot soap water to get all that nasty adhesive off. After this I simply stuck mine in the dishwasher to wash them and let them dry. After they are dry, you can start puting your sand and shells in the bottle. You only need about a 1/2 inch of sand otherwise your shells will sink to the bottom and you won't be able to see them. Then you put your drink umbrella in the bottle. Now you want to punch a hole in the side of your invitation, and tie a ribbon or rafia to it leaving it long enough for some to hang out of the bottle, like a pull cord. This is how your guests will get the invitation out of the bottle. After you have tied your ribbon to the invitation, you will need to roll up the invitation the short side facing you (I used 5.5" by 8.5" paper) and tie another ribbon or piece of rafia around the rolled up invitation, you might have to have another set of hands to do this. Then you insert the invitation into the bottle making sure that your "pull cord" is hanging out of the bottle. Insert your cork and they are ready to go.

I purchased boxes to mail these in, but most of ours we are hand delivering to save on shipping.
