Wedding Invitation Guide

The wedding invitation will likely be the first glimpse your guests get of your wedding style.  You can think of your wedding invitations as much more than a piece of fancy cardstock; the invitation sets the tone for the entire event.

Expert Tip: Black Tie or Beach Casual?

When it comes time to purchase invitations, you will have already secured a ceremony site and reception venue.  Equipped with your knowledge of the spaces, try to nail down the vibe and level of formality of your event.  Are you expecting guests to show up in tuxedos and evening gowns, their Sunday best, or sundresses and sandals?  While you can specify dress in the written portion- the look of the invitation will speak volumes about what guests can expect.  Consider the font, the design or embellishment, and the paper quality when making your selection.

An Elegant Event: Beautiful Beauty

A Formal Affair: Orchid Passion

Garden Vows: Enchanted Garden

Expert Tip: Dream in Color

After you've sorted out the general tone that you'd like to set, next, think color and theme.  Introducing these aspects of your event from the get-go will build up guests' anticipation and create a cohesive flow in the design and decor elements. A great way to infuse a theme is to place a graphic logo on all of the paper goods.  Incorporate a two-toned color story into your invitations or play with a vibrant shade by pairing it with a neutral pattern.

Expert Tip: Send Words of Love

Maybe you'd prefer guests donate to your honeymoon fund in lieu of gifts, or perhaps you'd rather not have children at the reception.  Whatever the case, there are no hard and fast rules about what one should or shouldn't include on a wedding invitation.  Remember your wedding day is first and foremost about celebrating love.  There is always a way to honor your guests while stating your wishes.  For example, instead of asking relatives to leave the kids at home, try to seek out childcare at or nearby the venue and offer the parents a 'night off.'  If ever you are at a loss, create an invitation that speaks from the heart and ask a trusted friend for her honest opinion.
