The "Greatest Generation" not only gave us a great deal to look up to, they gave us some of the most amazing fashions ever created. Vintage clothing is chic, unique and can also be inexpensive. It just takes a little creativity and a bit more time to find what your looking for. Here I have put together a beautiful vintage look for $55.00 for the dress and Birdcage Veil! With those kind of savings you will be able to splurge on other aspects of your wedding (or vow renewal) Additionally, you will be using several of the hottest styles this season, Vintage, shorter dresses and dresses in colors other than white or ivory. But before you start your vintage shopping please keep these things in mind:
Be sure to try it on! Don't go by the size shown on the label. Vintage clothing runs much smaller than modern day sizes. People were smaller so clothes were designed for more petite frames.
Know your measurements! Measure your bust, waist, hip, arm length, back waist length, inseam etc., and write those measurements down and keep them handy. If you are shopping online and the item doesn't have the measurements, ask the seller to give you the measurements of a dress you are interested in. A dress that is too big can always be altered (as long as it isn't so large that you and your maids can get into it!) but you can't make a garment that is too small any bigger! How and where to measure can be found here:
The Dress $30.00:
This beautiful grey (the season's hottest color!) floral lace overdress with a peach lining and peach sheer fabric gathered to the back and a balloon hem. At the empire waist is gathered the sheer with a self sheer fabric flower and a grey velvet ribbon. I fell in love with this dress and may just have to have it myself!
The Veil : $25.00
Nothing compliments a vintage style better than a birdcage veil. This veil from My Birdcage (see photo above upper right) has a Great Gatsby look to it. It is made of russian veiling but can be made of lace, tulle, french or silk veiling and is shown with a fascinator of fabric flowers and feathers (sold Separately). Not You? If that isn't the style your looking for I have many others to choose from or I can custom make a veil for you if you have a picture of a veil you like, email it to me for a quote.
A variety of shoes and purses can be found in both new and vintage styles to compliment your dresses.
Shopping for Vintage clothes is different than shopping for new clothing. You don't have a selection of sizes to pick from so finding what your looking for may take longer. Once you have your dress, take a day or two and go shopping with your maids to a vintage stores to find affordable vintages dresses in the colors of your wedding (buy birdcage veils in colors for maids too!)
Vintage clothing, hats, jewelry and accessories can be found at flea markets, garage sales, Goodwill Stores, Resale & Consignment Shops or your Mom or Grandmother's closet. (Don't forget to check their jewelry boxes too!) That takes care of "something old" and "something borrowed"!
Etsy is another great place to find vintage clothing for all Occasions and in all price ranges! http://www.etsy.com/?ref=si_home
Good luck with your Vintage wedding!
