DIY Wedding Challenge 2010: Etched Glass Favors -- all dolled up!

We thought long and hard about favors. We are very practical people and we couldn't see giving our guests something they'd throw away or leave on the table. We wanted them to have something to USE that would subtly remind them of our day. When I found out how easy it is to etch glass, I knew I had found the perfect way to personalize the wine glasses my mom was shamelessly pushing as her idea for favors. With a little polish, these beauties really dress up the tables!

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Glass! We chose wine glasses - but you could use jars, votives, vases anything you think your guests would appreciate in their homes!

  • Etching Cream

  • Etching stencils

  • Painter's tape

  • Foam applicators

  • Small paintbrushes

  • Small empty bucket

  • Some old rags

  • Paper towels

Of course, there are instructions on the bottle of etching cream, but if you're going to do a lot of pieces (250 in our case), I have some {{modified instructions}} to help the process go smoother.

*I should mention that you are supposed to wear gloves during this process. I was careless, but you definitely shouldn't be! The etching cream is an acid and could irritate your skin!!

STEP 1:

You might want to place a barrier between your materials and working surface. Etching cream is NOT friednly with finished surfaces or other various things you don't want acid to eat at ;)

Now, let's get cracking (hopefully not the glass, haha, bad joke)! Grab your first box of glass and wipe the pieces down.

[We found wine glasses for $10/dozen at Target]

{{Fill the empty bucket 3/4 of the way with warm-hot water.}}

NEXT:

Choose the stencil you want to work with and apply it to the glass where you want the design to appear. Make sure there are no air bubbles under the stencil.

{{Tape the edges down with painter's tape - this helps keep the cream from running onto other areas of the glass}}

{{I bought etching stencils from Michael's that blend with the rustic feel of our wedding. They have tons of designs to choose from there and at other craft stores. You want the ones you can use over and over or this project will get realllllly pricey!}}

THEN:

Use the small paintbrush to apply a generous coat of etching cream over the stencil. Follow the instructions on the bottle and allow the cream to sit for the recommended amount of time. (5 minutes for me)

NOW:

Hold the glass over the bucket, dip the foam applicator into the water to moisten it, and then use it to swipe off the etching cream.

{{This is soooo much easier than carrying each piece of glass to the sink to wash off the etching cream every time. It also helps the stencils retain their sticky-ness by avoiding unnecessary wetness}}

AFTER THAT:

Use your old rags to completely dry the surface of the glass and stencil.

AND THE FUN PART:

Peel off the tape and stencil and use a paper towel to ensure that the glass is dry. Congratulations! You now have a piece of (insert name here) Original Etched Glass to present to a lucky wedding guest.

LASTLY: The importance of PRESENTATION!

To polish these babies off, I created a favor tag using only Microsoft PowerPoint and Word. This will let my guests know the glasses are theirs to keep and not simply part of the table set up. You can even put some chocolates or candy in the glass to top it all off. Tie the candy in with the favor tag like we did and your GOLDEN!

HAPPY ETCHING!
