DIY Wedding Ideas

  • Project by Erica Obrien   No plates, no wrappers, these bite-sized gems are completely edible and perfect for everything from a formal dessert table at a wedding to a laid back gathering of girlfriends at a bridal shower. Of course the colors are customizable as are the sizes.
        Step 1: Make the Cups At least one day in advance, gather what you’ll need and make the cups. The farther in advance, the better. Be sure to make extras in case of breakage.      Here’s what you’ll need: Cardstock Tape Ruler Fondant in color of your choice Food-use only ruler Rolling pin Pizza wheel Water Two small round cutters, one slightly larger than the other Cornstarch (to prevent sticking)     Roll cardstock tightly.     Insert smaller round cutter into rolled up cardstock to ensure a snug fit.     Tape down length of cardstock to secure.     Use small amount of cornstarch to prevent fondant from sticking.     Roll fondant into long thin strip.     Place ruler on fondant and use pizza wheel to cut straight line. Save excess.     Repeat on other side of ruler, matching strip width to height of smallest cutter.     Use ruler to straighten edge of strip.     Cut strip into 4 ½” pieces, or large enough to wrap around cardstock roll with a slight overlap, creating a closed ring.     Wrap strips around cardstock roll, securing overlap with enough water to ensure sticking. Allow to dry at least overnight. Repeat as many times as needed until desired number of rings are made.       Roll out extra fondant. Using larger cutter, cut an equal number of discs as you have rings.     When dry, rings will be able to stand upright. Rings will create sides of cups; discs will form bottom of cups     Step 2: Make and Decorate the Cakes   Here’s what you’ll need: Cake of your choice baked in 2” high pan Piping bag with large round tip 8 and filled with your choice of buttercream Fondant rings and discs (made in advance) Edible “confetti” (sprinkles, sugar pearls, fondant circles, non pareils) in the color of your choice       Place fondant ring on fondant disc.     Place small amount of buttercream at bottom of ring to secure disc and cake to ring.     Use smaller cutter to cut cake round.     Insert cutter into ring and gently press to release cake. Press down to secure cake to buttercream.     Top cake round with candy kiss-shaped dollop of buttercream.     Top cake cups with confetti.

    This DIY packaging is a fresh and modern way to present small favors to guests.         Fill each cocoon with something fun to keep your guests busy (like these bright and nostalgic finger pops) and something sweet to snack on.   Materials: 1/2 craft glue- 1/2 water mixture Large spool of embroidery thread Balloons (1 balloon for every 2 favors)   Instructions:   1. Blow up your balloons and tie a length of thread to the end of the balloon.   2. Begin wrapping thread around the balloon, the messier the wrap the better.   3. Once you have a good covering over the entire balloon, dip a brush into the glue mixture and coat the entire balloon. Hang the balloon by its end to dry. Note: You could also use liquid fabric stiffener for this step in the project, just fill a large bowl and completely dip your wrapped balloons in.     4. Once dry, cut the balloon in half at the center width. Each balloon will make two separate cocoon wraps.      5. Gently pop each balloon and pull away from the fabric. Fill your wraps and tie together with a ribbon and simple tag.     6. Rest each favor on a place setting for a creative, modern touch.

    That of-the-moment (yet utterly classic) blue and white striped shirt seen just about everywhere these days inspired this fresh, stylish table setting. Here's how we did it!     Linens Customizing individual linens for each place setting is made easy by using inexpensive white cotton napkins and multi-surface acrylic craft paint. Simply iron each napkin flat, and paint thin stripes along the bottom.     Centerpiece Liven up your centerpiece container by adding a striped detail along the bottom. First, we spray-painted a clear glass vase with white spray paint and let it dry completely. Then, after marking off stripe-painting guides using low-tack adhesive tape, we painted stripes around the base of the container.     Floral Simplicity A single, oversized red dahlia adds just the right amount of color and drama to this centerpiece while keeping it simple and unfussy.     Menus Carry the stripey theme over to all aspects of your event! To create this menu card, we used blue cardstock, a white gel pen, and white paint.     Contrast + Color The blue menu card is a striking contrast atop the sea of white. Place one card at each table setting, or put one or two at each table.     Place Cards Make matching place cards by using white card stock and painting stripes along one edge with blue paint. Use a similarly-colored blue pen to print names on each card.     Coordinated Paper Goods Coordinating menu and place cards are a lovely and sophisticated detail.     Stripes, Stripes, Stripes! Using the same number of stripes and a common color scheme for each piece on your table creates a unified, crisp look that's perfect for a bridal shower or wedding day!     (photos by Mary Swenson)

    Using five varieties of Lilac and a a few stems of springtime Spirea, we created a gathered, musky bouquet that any bride would be happy to sink her nose in for a day. The textured, romantic style is perfect for a modern, traditional or country wedding.             You will need: 30 stems of lilac.  We used: Korean Lilac (tiny flowers), "Beauty of Moscow (light pink), "Mount Baker" (white), Common Purple Lilac and Wedgewood Blue. 15 stems of spirea string flower clippers ribbon or cloth tape   Directions: 1. Condition flowers overnight. Cut the stems and cut a slit upwards in each stem to allow it to drink water. Sit them in lukewarm water in a cool place away from drafts, heat, and fruit and food.   2. Strip most of the leaves off the lilacs. Usually the stems are long so trim them to around 12" each. Make sure there is one stem per large blossom. If there are two stems, trim one off.     3. Make piles of each type and color.   4. Gather 1- 2 stems in your one hand. Add stems at a 45 degree angle. Turn the bouquet to the right each time you add stems.     The stems should spiral. For the most part, larger, heavier blooms should sit at the bottom of the bouquet and lighter buds and blossoms should sit near the top.     5. Secure with twine or string.     6. Add a ribbon. We used a patterned cloth tape (usually sold for bookbinding) and simply wrapped it on top of the string. If you use a ribbon, secure with a pin.     Tips for working with lilacs: Always give them a clean cut when you bring them home. Cut at an angle, and then cut upwards into the stem, once. Use lukewarm water, lilacs don't like to be shocked by really cold or hot water.  If some blooms start to wilt, recut the stems. Keep away from fruit, food, direct sunlight, and drafts. Plan to buy a bit more than you need, a few stems in the bunch will always wilt.   Don't be afraid to work with lilac, if you remember these simple tips, it's easy!   Photo By Chelsea Fuss

    by Olivia Kanaley     Supplies: Wire berry garland (one 4 ft garland makes 5-6 wreaths) Natural floral wire Shipping tags Wire cutters White glue Paintbrush Clear glitter     Instructions: 1. Cut an 18" length of floral wire using wire cutters and form it into a circle about 2.5" in diameter as shown. 2. Snip sprigs from a wired berry garland and wrap them around the floral wire frame. 3. Continue until the wreath has berries all the way around.     4. Brush on white glue with a paintbrush and sprinkle with clear glitter. Let dry.     5. Tie on a tag with guest's name and table number.     Your escort wreaths will be a memorable memento from your winter wedding!

    This homemade project is so sweet and surprisingly easy to create!      You will need an iron to get your fabric just right.     You will also need blank envelopes, fabric (we like a variety of several patterns!), a glue stick is a must -- a cutting mat, an X-acto knife ... and do not forget your scissors!     Initially, you will need to make a pattern for your envelope.    For the Pattern: 1. Open your envelope and lay it down flat on your ironed fabric.     2. Trace the envelope and then cut out the fabric.   3. Next, trim the fabric so it's slightly more narrow and shorter than the envelope.    4. Slip the fabric inside the envelope to make sure it fits the width. You may have to trim some more until it looks about right. If the top of it is too long, this is OK, you will trim this later after you glue.     To Line the Envelopes: 1. After you've cut out your fabric liners (using the template or your own pattern), fit one inside an envelope to make sure it fits.    2.When it looks about right and is nice and flat with no wrinkles, lift up the top part that goes over the envelope flap. Cover this section of the envelope in glue.      3.Next, lift up the bottom portion and hold the envelope open. Cover the inside of the envelope with glue and press down the fabric.   4. Make sure the fabric is glued securely, especially along the edges of the flap.   5. Leave it to dry for about 15 minutes.   6. Take an X-acto knife and a cutting mat and trim around the edges. Make sure these are nice and clean.     7. Use 3 dabs of glue along the envelope flap to secure the envelope to mail.   Your guests will be surprised when they open the envelope and find the beautiful fabric liner! Add other special touches, like personalized stamps as well.     Voila!     Materials: 2 feet of 18" Russian Veiling Comb Thread and Needle Ruler Scissors  

    Important Note: There are two sides of the veiling: finished and unfinished. You want the finished end to run across your face NOT the unfinished side.

    Starting at point A start sewing in and out of the diamond shapes to gather the fabric. You'll continue sewing in and out on all sides until you get to point B.     Sew it to a hair comb.     After you attach it in your hair on the side of your head with bobby pins, then add an embellishment like a flower or feather to cover the comb.     Birdcage veils are made out of Russian Netting or Russian Veiling which is a millinery material. You can usually find it at a really good fabric store or online.     The veiling usually comes in three lengths 9" 12" and 18".     Isn't she gorgeous! If you just want a little coverage over your hair you want 9".     If you want it to cover your eyes, you'll want 12" and if you want it to cover your nose or chin you'll want the 18" veiling (cut it down to 16" to cover the nose.)     It comes in almost every color and you can also find veiling with chenille dots or pearls if you wanted to add embellishment in that way.     Inspired by precious birdcages everywhere!     Photos By: Carly Taylor   Add a sweet, personalized touch to desserts or drinks! They are easy to make in mass and can be completely customized to match your wedding colors and theme.     A stack of them laid out with chalk will provide your guests with the chance to personalize their drinks at the bar, or written on prior they can easily label each of your options for drinks or sweets at the reception!     The materials: Unsanded tile grout (home depot carries it), paint in whatever color you choose, white card stock paper, paint brush, hand sand paper, double sided tape, measuring cups, stir sticks, scissors.     The process:   1) Mix your 1/2 cup of your paint with 1 tablespoon of the tile grout and stir until the grout is completely dissolved.     Mixing the grout...     Stir away!  

     

    2) Using your brush, paint an even coat of the mixture onto your card stock paper and let dry. Once dry, lightly sand your paper by hand to remove any lifted spots.     3) Cut your paper into long thin lines and then cut each line down to the label size of your choosing, cut a V notch at the end of each to create a flag.     4) Fold each flag in half and using double sided tape attach to your stir stick.     Your flags are almost ready!     Voila!     5) Pre-write your labels with chalk or leave a handful out during your wedding festivities for guests to write in themselves.     How cute are these?!

Use them as wedding favor boxes for guest, bridal party gifts, even as holiday packaging for presents wrapped sweetly under the tree.     Materials: Kraft box (any size) Scissors Super thick yarn White watercolor Paint brush

    How-To:

      1. Fold the box and prepare watercolors with a few drops of water in a small dish or palette.     2. Write a message with watercolors on the top of the box.     3. Fill with yummy bakery items or other sweet treats.     4. Add a card inside the box to say thanks to guests for coming to your wedding. Or pen a note to your bridal party to tell your bridesmaids how much they mean to you.     5. Close up the box and add a long piece of yarn. Tie it in a bow or add a giant yarn pouf to finish the package.   Voila!

    Tissue paper flowers are a design-forward and inexpensive alternative to fresh or gumpaste flowers. They can be made well in advance and saved indefinitely. We recommend that they be used only with fondant cakes, as you don’t want the dye in the tissue paper to come into contact with buttercream.       What you'll need:   Crepe and/or tissue paper in the color palette of your choice Toothpicks (or skewers) Scissors Floral tape How To:     Step One: To form the center of the flower, cut a length of paper about three inches wide.       Step Two : Fold the paper so that each fold is about ¾" wide. (For smaller flowers, folds should be smaller; for larger flowers, folds should be bigger.)       Step Three: Use sharp scissors to cut a rounded edge.     Step Four: When unfolded, paper should have a scalloped edge.     Step Five: Begin rolling scallop in onto itself, pinching about ¼ of the way down from scalloped edge so that paper flares and opens slightly.      Step Six: Continue until entire length of paper is rolled up.       Step Seven: Twist the base of the paper as tightly as possible to form a stem.     Step Eight: Using a contrasting color, repeat steps one through seven, placing new paper around already-formed center.       Step Nine: Continue until entire length of paper is rolled up. For even larger flowers, additional layers of paper can be added by repeating steps two through seven.     Step Ten: Place toothpick or skewer against "stem" of flower.         Step Eleven: Stretch floral tape to activate, and wrap tightly around both toothpick and tissue paper until all paper is covered.     Step Twelve: Insert toothpick into fondant-covered cake.     Step Thirteen: Make as many flowers as desired to complete your design. Enjoy!

    Tissue paper flowers are a design-forward and inexpensive alternative to fresh or gumpaste flowers. They can be made well in advance and saved indefinitely. We recommend that they be used only with fondant cakes, as you don’t want the dye in the tissue paper to come into contact with buttercream.       What you'll need:   Crepe and/or tissue paper in the color palette of your choice Toothpicks (or skewers) Scissors Floral tape How To:     Step One: To form the center of the flower, cut a length of paper about three inches wide.       Step Two : Fold the paper so that each fold is about ¾" wide. (For smaller flowers, folds should be smaller; for larger flowers, folds should be bigger.)       Step Three: Use sharp scissors to cut a rounded edge.     Step Four: When unfolded, paper should have a scalloped edge.     Step Five: Begin rolling scallop in onto itself, pinching about ¼ of the way down from scalloped edge so that paper flares and opens slightly.      Step Six: Continue until entire length of paper is rolled up.       Step Seven: Twist the base of the paper as tightly as possible to form a stem.     Step Eight: Using a contrasting color, repeat steps one through seven, placing new paper around already-formed center.       Step Nine: Continue until entire length of paper is rolled up. For even larger flowers, additional layers of paper can be added by repeating steps two through seven.     Step Ten: Place toothpick or skewer against "stem" of flower.         Step Eleven: Stretch floral tape to activate, and wrap tightly around both toothpick and tissue paper until all paper is covered.     Step Twelve: Insert toothpick into fondant-covered cake.     Step Thirteen: Make as many flowers as desired to complete your design. Enjoy!
