We love this restaurant for poboys and raw oysters.  The turtle soup is great too!

We have eaten here once for dinner.  It was wonderful.  It's a quintessential New Orleans experience.  Jackets are required for the men for dinner.

You've gotta try a Hand Grenade!  They're Brandon's favorite.

You must try a Hurricane!  The courtyard is great and, if it's chilly outside, there are heaters.  The dueling piano bar is also really fun.

Take a ride on the St. Charles streetcar

St. Charles Avenue
New Orleans, Louisiana

The French Quarter is wonderful and there is so much to see there.  But, there are other parts of the city that are also wonderful in their own ways.  The Garden District and Uptown areas are great and have a lot to offer.  St. Charles Avenue has great restaurants, bars, majestic oaks and amazing homes.  A great activity would be to hop on the streetcar either at Carondelet and Canal or Canal and St. Charles.  It costs $1.25 per person per way and be sure to have exact change.

A few suggestions:

Ride the streetcar to the end of the line (Carrollton).  There is a landmark diner there, Camelia Grill.  There are a few ice cream shops.  There is a daquiri stand.

Along the line is Audubon Park, which is really nice.  Tulane University (where Jennifer is currently a student) is right across the street and is also very nice.

Our favorite Mexican restaurant, Superior Grill, is also on the streetcar line.

Whether you decide to get off the streetcar and enjoy these other areas or not, you must at least ride the streetcar and see the area.

Audubon Zoo/ Aquarium of the Americas

If you go to the Riverwalk, the Aquarium is right there and it's very nice, especially for the little ones.  The zoo is also very nice but a bit farther away, in the part of the city where we live.  One way to get there is by boat right in front of the Riverwalk.  There are little booths selling tickets with combo packages that include admission to the aquarium, a boat ride to the zoo, admission to the zoo, and a return boat ride to the Riverwalk area.  I'm not sure how much it costs but it's worth looking into.

Cafe Maspero

Huge portions of great food for low prices - what could be better!  Do have cash on hand since they don't accept credit cards.  The fried seafood platter is great!

Cafe DuMonde

Beignets (fried doughnuts with loads of powdered sugar) and cafe au lait!  Heaven!  If you decide to stay at the Place d'Armes hotel we have reserved, Cafe DuMonde will be right at your doorstep (well...almost)!

Commander's Palace

Commander's Palace is another New Orleans landmark.  It's located in the Garden District and is accessible by the streetcar (disembark the streetcar at Washington and walk two blocks across Prytania).  I have only been once for lunch with my sister and I highly recommend it.  For lunch, there are 25 cent martinis - Yes, 25 cents!  Lunch is also a more affordable way to enjoy the experience.  For dinner, the men must wear a jacket.  I hear that Sunday Brunch is also nice.
