When looking for hotels on your own, you want to stay in the Center of Rome (Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi, Piazza Navona, Campo Di Fiori or Trastevere
When booking a room:
Ask if there is an elevator in the building and what floor your hotel room will be on (not fun dragging heavy luggage up lots of stairs)
Ask for a room that has a window facing an inner courtyard if there is one, some times the noise
on the streets can keep you awake if your a light sleeper

The hotel Cestelli

is a perfect little hotel, next to Ponte Vecchio. It is owned by a very charming couple age 30 approx., Alessio and his wife Asumi. They give everything to make this place look special and are really welcoming! Also they speak perfectly english as Alessio spent 5 years in the USA. The night costs 50-70 euros. 
When I lived in Florence, I sent all the people visiting me over there and in it was more than a success.
