Accent Wall ~ To Do or Not To Do

So it turns out our area rug for the library might not be in for another couple weeks.  I've toyed with the idea of making the wall with the canvas on it an accent wall, because it is at the end of a longer skinnier room.  Hoping it might create some more depth.  With the room staying empty for another week or two my thought is if I want to do the accent wall it should be now or never.

Below is a sample of the toss pillow that will be on our large, round chocolate brown chair.  The drapes are what we'll hang up, but they're a bit more apple green in person.  Our bookcases are a dark, dark brown.

The only color accent wall I can see working is just a darker neutral.  What color do you think could work?  Cause I'm not sure if I want a darker neutral accent wall with all the dark furniture.

So it turns out photo 3128198-1  So it turns out photo 3128198-2   So it turns out photo 3128198-3

when you ask for the paint color you choose, ask them to make it 2 shades darker for that wall.

I have a friend that did that with her kitchen/dining room. It gives a little difference without having a completely different color or in your case more brown.

I agree with markande, two shades darker than what you have currently will work perfectly.  I did that in my master bedroom with neutral colors as well.  Here is a pic, please note this room is not completed as I have nothing on the walls, and we've since changed the comforter to a lighter colored quilt... but it shows both wall colors.

markande that is a good idea, and never really dawned on me.  Since it was a custom color that the builder did, I was not looking forward to picking paint chips and trying to match the tone.

mis1110 I didn't realize that two shades was that much darker, but I like it!  Definitey an option to consider :)

I guess I should clarify...  the darker is two blocks darker on the paint chips... If that is techincally two shades darker IDK colors are wierd (as an architect I deal with this a lot at work, shades of colors are difficult and touchy)  But it will also depend on the color itself our colors were somewhat on the darker side so the change is a little more drastic.

I also picked the darker color first and went lighter for the rest of the room and the color just a shade darker than the lighter one used (hope that wasn't confusing) didn't have enough of a contrast for what I was looking for.  So you may need to look at it that way and look into both the next shade darker and the one after that just to get the contrast you are looking for.  If you want it to be a suttle contrast then maybe the next shade darker will work and you won't need to go two shades.  Like I said before some colors the step from one to the next is a little more drastic than others.

Good Luck!  and don't fear the accent walls!  I've done then in quite a few rooms over the years (I don't have pictures of most though)  I did a bedroom that had sage walls on majority of them and an accent wall of cranberry/burgandy color.  I also did a lighter beige than what is in that picture with a very dark moss/hunter green (it sorta looked like the army green, that's how dark it was)

I look at paint this way, it's paint and cheap in comparison to other home improvement finishes, try it and if it doesn't work out, change it!  (that does only work if you don't mind painting though...)

Sorry I rambled there! :)

mis1110 I'm not afraid of accent walls in general, just for this room!  LOL.  It doesn't have a door, as it opens onto a hallway that leads to an open floor plan.  And we don't ever want to put doors on it (although French doors could look cute).  So the color of the walls right now matches what is in the hallway and open floor plan....so I don't think picking the dark shade and going backwards works in this case (or at least for me, haha).  But I can see how picking the dark color and working backwards works for other rooms.  I might take the paint in and see if they can get it darker and look at a sample before ordering the big ol' can of it.  Thanks!

I love the two shades darker suggestion! That was actually my first thought, although I also think you could pull in what looks like a kind of peachy or golden color (in the painting) as well. Both would look nice with the green accents without being overpowering.

I think that is your best bet, get a sample and see how it turns out... never hurts to try...

fromcoldtofire has a good point, if that canvas is staying you can always pull a color from there (I too like the peachy or golden color too) Pull it all together nicely!

I would go with an accent color that will really make the furniture and your green accents pop!!  Like maybe a Pottery Barn-ish muted orange shade would work?  I think it would look amazing!! :)

I would go with photo 3129097-1

Oops, sorry I totally forgot to mention that the canvas on the wall is going to be gone!  We ordered a large canvas of this wedding photo for that wall:
